Fun Toast Cup Quiches Made with Kids
[Mood & Cook #.77] Bread Series Part 2: Playtime Cooking! Let’s Make Together at Home!
This is a delightful recipe that you can enjoy with your children, turning it into a fun sensory play experience using just a slice of bread! * This recipe was originally provided as cooking content for the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s SNS in April 2020, under the theme ‘Delicious Home-Stay Recipes’. *
Ingredients- 5 slices of bread
- 3 strips of bacon
- 1/2 onion
- 1/2 bell pepper (using different colors will make it more visually appealing!)
- 1 egg
- 50ml heavy cream
- Adequate amount of pizza cheese (mozzarella or cheddar)
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare half an onion, finely chopped. Heat a lightly oiled pan over low heat and sauté the onion until it becomes translucent and tender. It’s important to sauté gently to avoid burning, maximizing the onion’s natural sweetness.
Step 2
Next, dice the bacon into bite-sized pieces (about 1cm) and finely chop the bell pepper. Add the diced bacon and bell pepper to the pan with the sautéed onions and cook together. The bacon fat will render, adding wonderful flavor to the vegetables. Sauté until the vegetables soften.
Step 3
Now it’s time to prepare the bread, which will form the sturdy base of your quiches. Carefully trim off the crusts from the bread slices. Then, use a rolling pin or the bottom of a glass to flatten the bread slices thinly and evenly. Gently press the flattened bread into muffin or cupcake molds, shaping them to create cup-like forms. Place these prepared bread cups into a preheated oven at 160°C (320°F) and bake for about 10 minutes until they are golden and crisp. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning!
Step 4
Once the bread cups are baked to a crisp, artfully arrange the sautéed onion, bacon, and bell pepper mixture inside each one. Distributing the toppings evenly will make the finished quiches look even more appetizing.
Step 5
Let’s make the creamy custard filling for the quiches. In a bowl, crack one fresh egg and pour in 50ml of heavy cream. Whisk them together gently to create the egg mixture. Season with a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper to taste. Carefully pour this seasoned custard into the bread cups, filling them only about two-thirds full. Filling them too much might cause them to overflow during baking.
Step 6
Finally, generously sprinkle your favorite pizza cheese over the top of each quiche. Using mozzarella cheese will add a delightful stretchy texture! Place the mini cup quiches, now topped with cheese, back into the preheated 160°C (320°F) oven and bake for about 15 minutes. They are ready when the cheese is melted and golden brown, and the filling is set. Enjoy your delicious toast cup quiches and have a wonderful time cooking with your children!
