Freshly Baked Warm Tortillas
Homemade Tortillas: A Step-by-Step Guide
I made tortillas at home! These homemade tortillas are incredibly soft, chewy, and much tastier than store-bought ones, especially when enjoyed warm right off the pan. Perfect for sandwiches, tacos, burritos, and more!
Ingredients- 200g All-purpose flour (approx. 1.5 cups)
- 95g Warm water (approx. 7 Tbsp)
- 2g Salt (approx. 1/3 tsp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, dissolve the 2g of salt in 95g of warm water. Stir with a spoon until the salt is completely dissolved. The water should be comfortably warm to the touch, not hot, to prevent cooking the flour.
Step 2
In a bowl, place the 200g of all-purpose flour. Gradually pour in the salted water while mixing with a spatula or your hands. The mixture will start as loose crumbles and then come together into a cohesive dough.
Step 3
Once the dough forms a ball, knead it on a clean surface or inside the bowl for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. A good indicator is when you can stretch the dough thinly without it tearing easily. This develops the gluten for a chewy texture.
Step 4
Wrap the smooth dough tightly in plastic wrap or place it in a sealed plastic bag. Let it rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour. If you have time, resting it for 2 hours will result in even softer tortillas. This resting period makes the dough more pliable and easier to roll out.
Step 5
After resting, divide the dough into 4 equal portions (or your desired size). Shape each portion into a ball. Lightly dust your work surface with flour and use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into a thin, round shape, about 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) in diameter. Be gentle to avoid tearing the dough. Rolling them thinly ensures a crispier yet tender tortilla.
Step 6
Heat a dry skillet (no oil needed) over medium-low heat. Carefully place the thinly rolled dough onto the hot pan. Once the edges start to puff up slightly and small bubbles appear, it’s time to flip it.
Step 7
Flip the tortilla and cook the other side for about 1 minute, or until golden-brown spots appear. Ensure the heat is not too high, as this can cause the tortillas to burn quickly. Cook gently over medium-low heat until both sides are nicely browned.
Step 8
(Enjoy your freshly baked tortillas warm! They are perfect for making delicious sandwiches, tacos, or burritos with your favorite fillings.)
