Fragrant Homemade Apple Jam
Healthy Sugar-Free Apple Jam Recipe Using Stevia and Earl Grey Tea
Received apples as a gift but have too many for a couple to eat? Make your own delicious apple jam! For those looking to reduce sugar intake for health reasons, this recipe uses stevia for a guilt-free sweetness. The subtle aroma of Earl Grey tea adds an extra layer of sophistication to this delightful preserve.
Key Ingredients- 3 Apples (approx. 800g)
- 2 Earl Grey Tea Bags
- 150ml Water
- 40g Stevia (use 1:1 ratio for regular sugar)
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the 3 apples thoroughly under running water. Then, use a peeler or paring knife to remove the skin from all the apples. While you can leave the skin on, removing it will result in a smoother jam texture.
Step 2
Core the peeled apples and dice them into bite-sized pieces. Aim for pieces about 0.5cm to 1cm in size, or slice them thinly. Cutting the apples into uniform pieces will help them cook evenly and reduce cooking time.
Step 3
Measure out 40g of stevia. If you are using regular sugar instead, prepare approximately 40g, maintaining a 1:1 ratio with the apples. Keep in mind that stevia is much sweeter than sugar, so adjust the amount to your preference.
Step 4
In a bowl, combine the diced apples with the measured stevia. Toss gently to coat the apple pieces evenly. Let them sit for about 5 to 10 minutes; you’ll notice that the apples will begin to release their natural juices, making them moist.
Step 5
While the apples are macerating, prepare a strong brew of Earl Grey tea. Steep 2 Earl Grey tea bags in 150ml of hot water for about 3-5 minutes until the tea is richly colored and aromatic. If using loose leaf tea, use about 1.5 teaspoons.
Step 6
Transfer the stevia-coated apples to a saucepan. Place it over high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and stir occasionally with a spatula to prevent sticking to the bottom. The apples will start to soften and reduce in volume.
Step 7
As the apples begin to cook down and soften, pour in the brewed Earl Grey tea. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer uncovered for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Continue cooking until the liquid has reduced and the jam has thickened.
Step 8
When the jam has reached your desired consistency and most of the liquid has evaporated, stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Lemon juice not only brightens the color and adds a hint of tartness but also helps preserve the jam.
Step 9
Finally, continue to cook over low to medium heat for another 5 minutes, or until the apple pieces become translucent and tender. Be careful not to overcook, as this can make the jam too stiff. Once done, remove from heat. Allow the jam to cool completely before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. Enjoy on toast, with yogurt, or as a delicious topping!
