Core Ingredients
  • 1 bowl of cooked rice
  • Assorted seasoned vegetables (namul)
  • Lettuce
  • Vinegar (a small amount)
  • 1 slice of cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 sheet of kimbap seaweed (gim)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the fresh lettuce thoroughly. Soak it in cold water with a little vinegar for a moment; this helps maintain its crispness and makes it even fresher. Rinse it well and then drain off all the excess water. Prepare the egg by either frying it sunny-side up or making a thin omelet, according to your preference. Using an egg omelet can add a richer flavor to your kimbap. Feel free to add any leftover vegetables from your fridge or other ingredients you enjoy to create your personalized kimbap.

Step 2

It’s a good idea to lightly stir-fry any leftover holiday dishes or cold side dishes from your fridge. Stir-frying makes the ingredients softer and removes excess moisture, which prevents the kimbap from becoming soggy. Cut the kimbap seaweed sheet into four equal pieces by folding it in half lengthwise and then widthwise. Using scissors, make a single, long cut along one of the marked edges of the seaweed sheet. This will make folding the kimbap much easier.

Step 3

Spread out the cut seaweed sheet. Evenly distribute one bowl of cooked rice over it. Then, arrange the cheese slice, prepared egg, crisp lettuce, and seasoned vegetables attractively on top. Avoid overfilling, as too many ingredients can cause the kimbap to burst or spill out. Aim for a moderate amount. You can also add other fillings like spam or bulgogi for an even more flavorful kimbap. Follow the arrow-indicated direction to fold the seaweed sheet, creating the basic shape of the kimbap.

Step 4

To help the kimbap hold its shape, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap. Once the shape is somewhat firm, use a knife to cut it in half. This method is significantly simpler than traditional kimbap rolling, and it’s so easy that even children can make it themselves. Enjoy this special kimbap that the whole family can easily make and enjoy together.
