Elegant Tuna Canapés: Perfect Appetizer for Guests & Wine Pairings!

When guests visit your home, especially if they’re bringing fine wine, you might wonder what kind of appetizer would be perfect. I’ve got you covered! I made these canapés for my recent guests, and they were a delightful surprise – surprisingly simple, easy, and incredibly delicious. While they’re a fantastic pairing for fine wine, canapés are also a popular choice for any finger food occasion. Let’s get started on making these wonderful canapés!

  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 15 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • Crackers: 2 packs (approx. 12 crackers)
  • Tuna: 75g (canned)
  • Cheddar cheese slices: 3 slices
  • Carrot: a small amount (finely minced)
  • Onion: a small amount (finely minced)
  • Mayonnaise: 2 Tbsp
  • Tangerines/Mandarins: 2

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, place 75g of tuna into a bowl. Drain the oil thoroughly using a sieve. Getting rid of excess oil makes the canapés cleaner tasting. You don’t need to press it excessively hard, but drain as much oil as possible.

Step 1

Step 2

Next, prepare the vegetables to mix with the tuna. Finely mince a small amount of carrot and onion. You only need a very small quantity of each – too much can overpower the tuna’s flavor. Just enough to add a hint of freshness.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the finely minced carrot and onion to the drained tuna. Then, mix in 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise. Stir gently until all the ingredients are well combined. Your delicious tuna salad filling is ready!

Step 3

Step 4

Prepare the crackers that will serve as the base for your canapés. Typically, crackers like Carr’s Table Water Crackers or similar plain crackers work best. I’m using 2 packs of crackers, which yields about 12 crackers. Feel free to use your favorite type.

Step 4

Step 5

Cut each slice of cheddar cheese into 4 equal pieces. This size will fit nicely on top of the crackers, adding a lovely cheesy element.

Step 5

Step 6

Place the quartered cheddar cheese pieces onto each cracker. You can arrange them neatly in the center or place them slightly askew, as I did, for a more casual look. The cheese adds a wonderful depth of flavor.

Step 6

Step 7

Now, spoon the prepared tuna filling onto the cheese. You can place the tuna right in the center or slightly off to one side – both look great! Consider how you’ll place the fruit garnish before adding the tuna to achieve the most appealing presentation.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, let’s add a touch of freshness with the tangerines. Peel the tangerines and, if you wish for an extra-smooth texture, remove the white pith as well. While not strictly necessary, removing the pith makes them easier to eat. Cut the tangerine segments into bite-sized pieces and place them on top of the canapés.

Step 8

Step 9

Voila! Your beautiful and delicious tuna canapés are ready. I used tangerines as the fruit garnish, and their bright, slightly tart flavor paired surprisingly well with the tuna. These canapés are perfect for special occasions, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying with a glass of wine or spirits!
