Main Ingredients
  • 2 long tteok (rice cake) logs
  • 10 large Vienna sausages
  • 5 medium-sized skewers

Spicy-Sweet Sauce
  • 3 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Ingredient Prep Tip: If your tteok is hard, it might crack or break when you skewer it. To prevent this, microwave the tteok for about 20-30 seconds. This will soften them, making them much easier to handle. – For more delightful Christmas home party ideas, consider preparing Mille-feuille Steamed Dish (@6901834), Microwave Brownies (@6902528), Steamed Clams (@6902727), Sweet Potato Pizza (@6902715), or Refreshing Pasta Salad (@6902717)!

Step 2

Cut the tteok logs into 2-3 cm pieces, matching the width of the Vienna sausages, to get 10 pieces. Make 2-3 shallow cuts on the sausages to create a decorative pattern. This also helps prevent them from bursting during cooking and allows the sauce to adhere better.

Step 3

Thread the tteok and sausage pieces onto the skewers, alternating them. Using two pieces of each per skewer creates a balanced and visually appealing result. Please handle the sharp ends of the skewers with care.

Step 4

Fill your steamer with water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, carefully place the assembled tteok-sausage skewers into the steamer. Steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until the sausages are heated through and the tteok is soft and pliable. Be careful not to over-steam, as the tteok might become too mushy.

Step 5

While the skewers are steaming, mix together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl: 3 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/2 tablespoon of gochujang, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Whisk until well combined to create a delicious sauce. – Sauce Flavor Tip: If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can add a little more sugar. For a spicier kick, increase the gochujang slightly. Adjust the ingredients to suit your personal preference.

Step 6

Once the skewers are perfectly steamed, remove them from the steamer and generously brush the prepared spicy-sweet sauce all over. Applying the sauce while they are warm helps it to absorb beautifully. Voila! Your delicious tteok-sausage skewers are ready! Enjoy!
