Easy Snack! Crispy & Moist “Shikppang” Hot Dogs Made in an Air Fryer
Homemade Air Fryer Bread Hot Dogs: A Delightful Snack Recipe
I made hot dogs using slices of bread! Instead of frying them in oil, I quickly made them in the air fryer. They were a huge hit with the kids when they came home from school as an after-school snack.
Ingredients- 5 slices of bread
- 5 sausages (like Vienna sausages)
- 2 eggs
- Breadcrumbs (can be made from the bread crusts or store-bought)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, briefly blanch the sausages in boiling water. This helps remove any unwanted odors and enhances their flavor.
Step 2
Carefully trim off the crusts from the slices of bread using a knife. (Don’t throw these away! They can be used to make fresh breadcrumbs.)
Step 3
Using a rolling pin or a clean bottle, gently flatten the bread slices until they are thin and pliable. This makes them easier to roll around the sausage and creates a neater shape.
Step 4
Place a blanched sausage at one end of a flattened bread slice. Roll it up tightly, like making sushi, ensuring the bread wraps snugly around the sausage. Overlap the edge slightly to help it stay sealed.
Step 5
To prevent the bread from unraveling, secure the rolled hot dogs with toothpicks. Insert them through the seam and the middle of the roll to keep everything in place.
Step 6
In a small bowl, crack the 2 eggs and whisk them thoroughly with a fork or whisk until the yolks and whites are fully combined.
Step 7
Take the bread crusts trimmed in step 1 and pulse them in a food processor until finely ground into breadcrumbs. If you don’t have a food processor or prefer not to make your own, store-bought breadcrumbs work perfectly fine.
Step 8
Dip the secured bread hot dogs into the beaten egg mixture, ensuring they are evenly coated. This egg wash will help the breadcrumbs adhere well.
Step 9
Roll the egg-coated hot dogs in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure an even and generous coating. This step is key to achieving a crispy exterior.
Step 10
Place the bread hot dogs into your air fryer basket. Before cooking, lightly brush the exterior with a little cooking oil for extra crispiness and a golden-brown finish. Air fry at 180°C (356°F) for about 10 minutes. Flip them halfway through (around the 5-minute mark) to ensure even browning on all sides. Please note that air fryer models can vary, so keep an eye on them and adjust the cooking time as needed. Enjoy your delicious homemade bread hot dogs!
