Ingredients- 10-15 Vienna sausages (or your preferred small sausages)
- 150 mL Pancake or Waffle Mix
- 1 large Egg
- 50 mL Water
- Panko breadcrumbs, for coating (as needed)
- Ketchup, for serving
- Mustard sauce, for serving
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, let’s prepare the batter for our mini hot dogs. In a bowl, combine 150 mL of pancake or waffle mix with 1 large egg and 50 mL of water. The total liquid amount (egg + water) should be around 100 mL for the perfect consistency. Whisk everything together until smooth, ensuring there are no lumps.
Step 2
Next, we’ll prepare the sausages. Bring a pot of water to a boil and carefully add the Vienna sausages. Blanch them for just 30 seconds. This quick blanching helps the sausages plump up and ensures the batter adheres well, preventing them from bursting during frying.
Step 3
After blanching, gently remove the sausages from the water and pat them thoroughly dry with a kitchen towel. It’s crucial to remove excess moisture, as this will help the breading stick properly and prevent splattering when frying.
Step 4
Now, it’s time to coat the sausages. Dip each dried sausage into the prepared pancake batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Then, immediately roll the battered sausage in panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to make sure the crumbs adhere well. A good coating of breadcrumbs is key to a crispy exterior.
Step 5
For an extra-crispy coating, we’ll repeat the breading process. This is the state of the sausage after the first batter and breadcrumb coating.
Step 6
And this is the sausage after the second dip in batter and breadcrumbs. This double coating will create a wonderfully crunchy texture on the outside while keeping the inside moist and delicious.
Step 7
You can cook your mini hot dogs using one of two methods. For frying, heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Don’t worry too much about the exact oil temperature; simply fry until the hot dogs turn a beautiful golden brown. Alternatively, use an air fryer: preheat it to 180°C (350°F) and cook for about 5 minutes, checking every so often until they are golden and cooked through.
Step 8
And there you have it! Once they achieve this lovely golden-brown color, your mini hot dogs are perfectly done. Serve them warm with your favorite ketchup and mustard for a delightful treat!
