Hotteok Dough Ingredients

  • 1 Hotteok Mix Packet
  • 130ml Warm Water (approx. 105-115°F or 40-45°C)
  • 5 Tbsp Cooking Oil (for pan-frying)

Suggested Toppings

  • 1 Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 1 Tbsp Cheese (e.g., Cheddar or Mozzarella, optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast packet (included in the mix) into 130ml of warm water (around 105-115°F or 40-45°C). Stir gently for about 1-2 minutes until the yeast is fully dissolved.

Step 1

Step 2

Add the hotteok mix to the yeast-water mixture. Knead with a spatula or your hands until a soft dough forms. If the dough seems too dry and crumbly, add a tablespoon or two of warm water until it reaches a smooth, pliable consistency. Continue kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 2

Step 3

Lightly coat your hands with cooking oil to prevent the dough from sticking. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and roll each portion into a smooth ball.

Step 3

Step 4

Take one dough ball and flatten it on your oiled palm. Create a small indentation in the center, forming a well where the filling will go.

Step 4

Step 5

Generously fill the indentation with the sweet filling mix provided in the packet. Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together to seal the filling inside, ensuring it doesn’t leak out. Be cautious not to overfill, as this can cause the hotteok to burst during cooking.

Step 5

Step 6

Ensure the dough is completely sealed by re-pinching the seams. Reshape it gently into a round disc, making sure the filling is securely enclosed.

Step 6

Step 7

Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Place the sealed dough, seam-side down, onto the hot pan.

Step 7

Step 8

Once the bottom of the hotteok turns a golden brown, carefully flip it over with a spatula. Gently press down on the hotteok with the spatula to flatten it slightly.

Step 8

Step 9

Pressing down gently after flipping helps the hotteok cook evenly without bursting. Avoid pressing too hard initially, which can cause it to split. Press gradually as it cooks to achieve a crispy exterior and a chewy interior. Cook until golden brown on both sides.

Step 9

Step 10

Your delicious hotteok is ready! Enjoy it plain for a classic treat, or for an extra special delight, top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. (Optional) My mix included cornflakes, which added a wonderful crunch when sprinkled on top.

Step 10

Step 11

[Optional Topping Upgrade] For a savory twist, add cheese! Mix shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese with the sweet filling before sealing the dough. This creates a delightful ‘cheese hotteok’ that’s a hit with both kids and adults. Experience the irresistible combination of sweet and savory!
