Easy Homemade Stir-fried Kimchi and Ham Onigiri
Recipe for Stir-fried Kimchi and Ham Onigiri, Convenience Store Style
While kimbap is delicious, onigiri (rice balls) are often made for convenience. Today, let’s make convenience store-style stir-fried kimchi and ham onigiri wrapped in toasted seaweed. It’s a quick and satisfying snack!
Ingredients- 2 handfuls of ham, diced
- 2 handfuls of stir-fried kimchi, finely chopped
- 1 sheet of roasted seaweed (for onigiri or kimbap)
- 2 bowls of cooked rice (warm)
- 1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Lightly grease a frying pan with cooking oil and sauté the finely diced ham until lightly browned. The ham will release its own delicious fats as it cooks. Once the ham is partially cooked, add the finely chopped stir-fried kimchi and stir-fry them together until well combined. The tangy kimchi and savory ham create a flavorful filling.
Step 2
When the ham and kimchi are nicely stir-fried, add the 2 bowls of warm cooked rice and 1/2 Tbsp of oyster sauce to the pan. Oyster sauce adds a savory depth that enhances the overall flavor of the rice. Using a spatula, gently mix the rice with the stir-fried ingredients and oyster sauce, ensuring everything is evenly distributed and not clumping.
Step 3
To prevent the rice from becoming mushy or hard, it’s important to gently cut through the rice with your spatula as you stir-fry. This technique helps to keep the individual grains of rice separate, resulting in a softer and tastier stir-fried rice. Continue to cook until all ingredients are well combined and have a glossy appearance.
Step 4
Prepare your onigiri mold. Spoon the prepared stir-fried kimchi and ham rice into the mold, pressing down firmly with the back of a spoon or your hands to create a compact triangle shape. Pressing firmly ensures the onigiri will hold its shape well. Carefully unmold the rice ball once shaped.
Step 5
Cut the roasted seaweed sheet into a long strip, suitable for wrapping the base of the onigiri. Place the cut seaweed sheet at the bottom of the shaped rice ball. Starting from the bottom, carefully wrap the seaweed around the sides of the onigiri, pressing gently to secure it. Your delicious homemade stir-fried kimchi and ham onigiri is now complete! Enjoy this quick and satisfying treat.
