Easy Homemade Okonomiyaki
Simple and Delicious Okonomiyaki Recipe for Beginners
Craving Okonomiyaki? I found this incredibly easy and simple recipe online that I now make all the time! You can also substitute bacon with shrimp or experiment with different sauces. Enjoy making this at home!
Batter Ingredients- 1 cup all-purpose flour (using a measuring cup)
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a bowl, combine 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of water, stirring well. Crack in 1 egg and whisk until smooth, ensuring there are no lumps. The batter should have a consistency where it flows smoothly when lifted with a spoon. Be careful not to make it too thin, or the pancake might break.
Step 2
Thinly shred the cabbage and thinly slice the onion. Cut the bacon into 1-2 cm pieces and pan-fry until golden brown and slightly crispy, then drain off excess grease.
Step 3
Add the shredded cabbage and onion, along with the cooked bacon, to the prepared batter. Mix everything together thoroughly. For an extra layer of flavor, you can finely chop some green onions and add them to the mixture (if you have them on hand).
Step 4
Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Pour all the batter into the pan and spread it evenly into a round, flat shape using a spatula. Arrange the remaining 2 strips of bacon on top of the batter for decoration. Cook over high heat for about 2 minutes, then reduce the heat to medium and cook for another 2 minutes. Check the edges; once they start to firm up, it’s time to flip.
Step 5
Carefully flip the Okonomiyaki using a spatula. Cook the other side for about 3 more minutes, ensuring the inside is cooked through. Transfer the Okonomiyaki to a plate, making sure the bacon side faces up.
Step 6
Generously spread BBQ sauce all over the top of the Okonomiyaki. Alternatively, tonkatsu sauce also works wonderfully. Sprinkle with slivered almonds or chopped walnuts for added texture and nutty flavor.
Step 7
Place 2 Tbsp of mayonnaise into a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag with a small corner cut off. Drizzle the mayonnaise decoratively in a zigzag pattern over the top. If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a spoon to dollop it on.
Step 8
Finally, sprinkle a generous amount of katsuobushi flakes on top for the finishing touch. Watch them dance and flutter from the heat – it’s part of the fun!
Step 9
Slice your delicious Okonomiyaki like a pizza and enjoy it while it’s warm. It looks great and is easy to share!
