You don’t even need many extra ingredients for the rice balls themselves; rice and onions are enough to make them delicious. Extra tip for even tastier enjoyment! If you’ve made a soft-boiled egg, break the yolk. Dip the fried onion and ham rolls into the runny yolk. You’ll find you don’t need any other sauce!

Ham and Rice Ball Ingredients

  • 6 slices of sliced ham
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 bowl of cooked rice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • Pinch of sesame seeds
  • 1/2 onion

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare 6 slices of sliced ham. Since the ham is very thin, fry them for about 2-3 minutes per side until lightly browned. Be careful not to burn them. Simultaneously, fry one egg in a pan until the yolk is still runny (a soft-boiled egg adds extra deliciousness!).

Thinly slice half an onion. Place the sliced onions in a heated pan, add a pinch of salt and a pinch of pepper, and sauté until the onions become translucent and tender. Sautéing thoroughly helps bring out the natural sweetness of the onion.

Now, let’s make the rice balls. In 1/3 bowl of warm cooked rice, add a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma, and a pinch of sesame seeds. Mix all these ingredients thoroughly while the rice is still warm; this helps the seasoning evenly coat the grains, making them more flavorful. Divide the seasoned rice into 6 equal portions and shape them into small, slightly flattened balls. Place one portion of rice onto a slice of the prepared ham. Add a spoonful of the sautéed onions onto the rice, then carefully roll the ham around the rice and onion mixture. The savory ham combined with the sweet onions creates a delightful flavor profile.
