Main Ingredients
  • 1/4 head cabbage
  • Water (about 1/2 cup)
  • Plastic wrap

Ssamjang Seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp Doenjang (fermented soybean paste)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochujang (red chili paste)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochugaru (red chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp Maesilcheong (plum extract)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Start by removing any wilted outer leaves from the cabbage and washing it thoroughly under running water. For an extra clean taste, you can soak the cabbage in water with a splash of vinegar for about 10 minutes before rinsing.

Step 2

Place the washed cabbage, cut side down, into a microwave-safe bowl or dish that has some depth. Add enough water (about 1/2 cup) to slightly cover the bottom of the cabbage to ensure it steams nicely.

Step 3

Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Then, use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to poke about 5-6 small holes in the plastic wrap. This allows steam to escape, preventing pressure buildup and helping the cabbage cook evenly.

Step 4

Microwave on high for 8 to 10 minutes. Cooking time may vary slightly depending on the size of your cabbage and the wattage of your microwave. To check for doneness, carefully insert a fork or skewer; it should slide in easily. Congratulations, you’ve perfectly steamed cabbage in a remarkably simple way!

Step 5

Now, let’s prepare the flavorful ssamjang to go with your steamed cabbage! In a small bowl, simply combine the doenjang, gochujang, gochugaru, maesilcheong, and minced garlic. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. It’s that easy to make a delicious dipping sauce!
