Main Ingredients
  • Fish cakes (Eomuk) 200g
  • 1 Onion (medium size)
  • Korean chili peppers (Ggwiri Pepper) 100g
  • Mixed nuts 100g (e.g., walnuts, almonds, peanuts)

Sweet & Savory Soy Sauce Seasoning
  • Soy sauce 2 Tbsp
  • Sugar 3 Tbsp
  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 1 Tbsp
  • Minced garlic 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized rectangular pieces, approximately 2x3cm. The exact shape can vary depending on the type of fish cake, so feel free to adjust to your preference.

Step 2

Heat 1-2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the Korean chili peppers (Ggwiri Peppers) and stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes until they are lightly cooked. This helps to retain their crispiness and flavor. (If you like spicy food, you can prick them with a fork before stir-frying.)

Step 3

Push the stir-fried chili peppers to one side of the pan. Add the cut fish cakes and stir-fry over medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Lightly stir-frying the fish cakes removes excess oil and gives them a chewier texture.

Step 4

Once the fish cakes are lightly stir-fried, add the thinly sliced onion and the mixed nuts. Continue to stir-fry together for about 1-2 minutes, until the onions begin to turn translucent. Be careful not to overcook the nuts as they can burn easily.

Step 5

Now, let’s prepare the delicious sweet and savory soy sauce seasoning. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 3 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), and 1 Tbsp minced garlic. Mix well. Having the sauce pre-mixed makes cooking smoother. Pour the prepared sauce into the pan. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry quickly for 1-2 minutes, ensuring all ingredients are evenly coated with the sauce. It’s important to stir-fry until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the ingredients beautifully.

Step 6

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tsp of sesame oil and 1/2 Tbsp of corn syrup or honey. This will give the dish a beautiful glossy finish and add an extra layer of sweetness and nutty aroma, completing your delicious stir-fried fish cakes. Serve hot over rice or enjoy as a standalone side dish.
