How to Make Delicious Spam Fried Rice Without Greasiness
Received a gift of Spam! Let’s make some fried rice. This recipe ensures a non-greasy, delightful fried rice experience.
Ingredients- 1/2 can Spam (approx. 200g)
- 3 leaves cabbage
- 2 Tbsp minced carrot
- 1 shiitake mushroom
- A little green onion
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 egg
- 1 bowl cooked rice (cold, approx. 200g)
Seasoning (Sauce)- 2/3 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp plum syrup
- 2 tsp cooking wine (mirin or sake)
- 3 Tbsp EV olive oil
- 1 Tbsp water (add as needed)
- A pinch of pepper
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2/3 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp fish sauce
- 1 Tbsp plum syrup
- 2 tsp cooking wine (mirin or sake)
- 3 Tbsp EV olive oil
- 1 Tbsp water (add as needed)
- A pinch of pepper
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Finely chop all the vegetables for an even distribution in the fried rice. Dice the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and mince the carrot. Slice the shiitake mushroom thinly for texture. Finely chop the green onion.
Step 2
Heat 3 Tbsp of EV olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the Spam, green onion, and minced garlic, and stir-fry until fragrant. Once the Spam is lightly browned, add the minced carrot and continue to stir-fry. If the pan becomes too dry, add 1 Tbsp of hot water at a time to continue cooking. (Tip: Using hot water helps maintain the cooking temperature.)
Step 3
Gradually add the seasoning ingredients – oyster sauce, fish sauce, plum syrup, cooking wine, pepper, and red pepper flakes – to the stir-fried ingredients, tasting and adjusting the seasoning as you go. Cook until the vegetables are tender. When the vegetables are almost fully cooked, push them to one side of the pan to create space. Crack the egg into the empty space. (Optional: For a prettier presentation, you can separate the egg white and yolk and cook them individually.)
Step 4
If you separated the egg white and yolk, cook the egg white first, then mix in the yolk and cook until done. (If you’re short on time or prefer a simpler approach, you can mix the egg directly with the vegetables and stir-fry.)
Step 5
Now, thoroughly combine all ingredients in the pan and continue to stir-fry. Break up any clumps of cold rice with your spatula and stir-fry until each grain is separate and fluffy. Cook until the rice is well-heated and has a pleasing texture.
Step 6
Pack the finished fried rice into a small bowl to shape it. Then, place your serving plate upside down over the bowl and carefully invert them together to release the molded fried rice. Enjoy your beautifully presented and delicious Spam fried rice!
