Main Ingredients

  • Vienna sausages 350g (1 pack)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1/4 Carrot
  • 1/2 Yellow bell pepper
  • 1/2 Red bell pepper
  • 2 Korean green chili peppers (if you like it spicy)

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Vinegar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 4 Tbsp Ketchup (adds rich flavor to the sauce)
  • 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean red chili paste for spicy-sweet taste)
  • Pinch of Black pepper
  • Pinch of Sesame seeds (for nutty flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables. Peel the onion and bell peppers, then cut them into roughly 1.5 cm cubes. Cutting them into uniform sizes helps them cook evenly and look appealing when served.

Step 1

Step 2

Dice the carrot into pieces similar in size to the other vegetables. Finely chop the deseeded Korean green chili peppers. You can omit the chili peppers or adjust the amount to control the spiciness to your preference.

Step 2

Step 3

Make 2-3 shallow cuts on the Vienna sausages. This helps the sauce penetrate better when cooking. You can score them diagonally or in a cross pattern for a decorative touch.

Step 3

Step 4

Place the scored sausages in boiling water and blanch for about 30 seconds. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy. Immediately rinse them under cold running water, drain well in a colander, and pat dry. This step removes excess grease from the sausages and makes them firm and chewy when stir-fried.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, let’s start stir-frying. Heat 3 tablespoons of cooking oil in a wide pan over medium-low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant and lightly golden. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the garlic from burning.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the garlic is golden brown, add the blanched Vienna sausages. Stir-fry briefly to coat them with the garlic aroma. Cook just until the sausages are lightly browned.

Step 6

Step 7

Add all the prepared vegetables, including the onion, carrot, bell peppers, and chili peppers. Stir-fry over high heat for a short time. It’s important to keep the vegetables crisp, so avoid overcooking them.

Step 7

Step 8

It’s time to add the delicious sauce. Mix in 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of gochujang, and 4 tablespoons of ketchup. Stir well to combine. (You can add 1 tablespoon of sugar here if you prefer a sweeter taste. In this recipe, the sweetness from the ketchup is considered sufficient.)

Step 8

Step 9

Continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes, mixing everything thoroughly so the sauce evenly coats the ingredients. Stir-frying quickly over high heat prevents the sauce from reducing too much and gives it a glossy finish.

Step 9

Step 10

Finally, just before turning off the heat, sprinkle in a pinch of black pepper for added aroma and mix well. Transfer the delicious Ssoya Bokkeum to a serving plate and sprinkle with sesame seeds for a nutty finish. Enjoy with a warm bowl of rice or as a delightful snack with your favorite beverage!
