Delicious Mongolian Beef (Soy Meat Recipe)

Have you heard of Mongolian Beef? It’s a dish occasionally found in Chinese restaurants! Originally, it was created by Chinese immigrants in the 19th century who used local ingredients in America, so it actually has no relation to Mongolia, haha. Anyway! This dish perfectly suits the Korean palate! Today, we’ll introduce how to make it. And guess what! We’re making it with soy meat!

Recipe Info

  • Category : Main dish
  • Ingredient Category : Beans / Nuts
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Intermediate

Main Ingredients

  • 1 handful of soy meat (squeeze out excess water)
  • 1 stalk of green onion (cut into large pieces, focusing on the white part)
  • A handful of cabbage (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/4 onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (finely chopped, adjust spiciness to your preference)
  • 3-4 cloves garlic (minced)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

1. First, let’s make the delicious sauce that is the heart of Mongolian Beef. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 3 Tbsp sugar, 6 Tbsp water, and 1 Tbsp chicken stock. Mix well. For a touch of heat, add 1 finely chopped Cheongyang chili pepper – it adds a wonderful spicy note!

Step 1

Step 2

2. Next, we’ll prepare the batter to make the soy meat crispy. In a separate bowl, mix 1 Tbsp cornstarch, 1 egg white, and 1 Tbsp cooking oil until it reaches a consistency similar to mayonnaise. The batter should be thick enough to coat the ingredients well without being too runny.

Step 2

Step 3

3. Coat the boiled and well-drained soy meat evenly with the prepared batter. To eliminate any potential beany smell from the soy meat and enhance its flavor, sprinkle with a pinch of black pepper and let it marinate for about 10 minutes.

Step 3

Step 4

4. Now it’s time to fry the soy meat until golden and crispy. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan and add the battered soy meat. Fry until it’s golden brown and crispy. Since the soy meat is already cooked, you can remove it once the batter is perfectly crisp.

Step 4

Step 5

By frying the soy meat this way, the crispy batter creates a delightful texture – crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This reduces any unwanted soy flavors and enhances the overall taste, making it a Mongolian Beef that everyone, young and old, can enjoy.

Step 5

Step 6

5. Now, let’s stir-fry the vegetables to add more flavor to the Mongolian Beef. In another pan, heat a little cooking oil and sauté the minced garlic, sliced onion, and large-cut green onions until fragrant. It’s important to sauté the vegetables until their natural sweetness is released. 6. Once the vegetables are slightly softened, pour in the prepared Mongolian sauce and bring it to a boil to thicken slightly.

Step 6

Step 7

7. When the sauce starts to bubble, add the fried soy meat, cabbage pieces, and chopped Cheongyang chili pepper. Stir-fry quickly until the sauce evenly coats all the ingredients. It’s best to stir-fry so the cabbage retains a slight crispness.

Step 7

Step 8

8. Transfer the finished Mongolian Beef to a serving plate. The sweet, savory, and slightly spicy Mongolian sauce, combined with the crispy fried soy meat and fresh vegetables, creates a truly fantastic flavor. This Mongolian Beef is perfect as a side dish for rice or as an impressive meal on its own. Be sure to try making it – it will absolutely capture your taste buds!
