Recipe Info

  • Category : Side dish
  • Ingredient Category : Eggs / Dairy
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Pan-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Beginner

Essential Ingredients

  • 5 fresh eggs
  • 60g processed ham
  • 1 slice of processed cheese
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • A little cooking oil for the pan

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, crack 5 fresh eggs into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt. Whisk the eggs gently with a whisk until the whites and yolks are well combined. Be careful not to over-whisk, as too much foam can prevent the omelet from looking neat.

Step 1

Step 2

Finely mince the ham into bite-sized pieces for the children. If dicing by hand is too much trouble, you can use a food processor or slice the ham into thin strips. This will add a nice texture to the omelet.

Step 2

Step 3

Cut the slice of cheese in half to fit the length of the omelet. Folding it in half will help the cheese distribute evenly inside, making it even more delicious.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, heat a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Lightly coat the entire pan with cooking oil using a paper towel. Pour about 1/3 of the beaten egg mixture thinly into the pan. Keeping the heat on low is crucial to prevent the egg from burning.

Step 4

Step 5

The perfect time to start rolling is when the edges of the egg start to set, but the center is still slightly runny. You want the surface of the egg to still look moist, as shown in the photo.

Step 5

Step 6

Using a spatula, gently fold about one-third of the cooked egg over itself. Folding too much will make it difficult to add the fillings, so aim to fold just one-third of the way.

Step 6

Step 7

Place the minced ham evenly on one side of the folded egg, and then layer the prepared slice of cheese on top of the ham. The cheese will melt and create a delicious combination with the ham.

Step 7

Step 8

Using a spatula and a spoon, carefully roll the egg over the fillings, enclosing them completely. Roll it firmly, similar to how you would roll sushi. This technique creates space at the end for more egg mixture.

Step 8

Step 9

Pour another third of the beaten egg mixture into the empty space in the pan. Continue to cook over low heat, ensuring the egg doesn’t burn. Allow the newly poured egg to cook and flow under the rolled portion for a moment.

Step 9

Step 10

Once the edges of the newly poured egg start to set, lift the rolled portion and carefully roll it over again to cover the fresh egg. Be gentle to avoid tearing the egg.

Step 10

Step 11

Finally, pour the remaining egg mixture into the pan. Once it’s cooked, roll the omelet again. By dividing the egg mixture into three pours and rolling each time, you’ll create a thick and appealing rolled omelet. More experienced cooks might use two spatulas to stand the omelet on its side and cook the edges for a neater shape, but for a simple home-style side dish, this isn’t strictly necessary as the sides will cook sufficiently.

Step 11

Step 12

Carefully transfer the completed rolled omelet from the pan to a cutting board. It’s important to let it cool for a bit before slicing. If you slice it while it’s too hot, the cheese will melt and ooze out, making the cross-section messy.

Step 12

Step 13

Once slightly cooled, slice the rolled omelet into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick. This thickness looks appealing and is easy to eat. Slicing immediately can cause the cheese to leak and ruin the shape, so be sure to let it cool sufficiently first.

Step 13

Step 14

Here is the finished ham and cheese rolled omelet served on a plate. (I may have sampled the delicious ends while cutting!) You can also add a little ketchup on top if you like. My children prefer it without, but feel free to try it for a different flavor!

Step 14

Step 15

A proper rolled omelet has the ham, cheese, and egg fused together. Since I was taking photos and cooking alone, the egg got a bit overcooked, so the shape isn’t perfect. However, the fantastic combination of savory ham, creamy cheese, and delicate egg is still wonderful! It cuts through the richness when eaten with spicy food, and it’s a fantastic option for kids’ meals or lunchboxes when you need a quick side dish using just eggs. Enjoy your delicious creation!
