Delicious Chinese Stir-Fried Peppers (Gochu Japchae)
Perfect for Special Occasions: Authentic Chinese-Style Gochu Japchae by Chef Lee Yeon-bok (Ready in 30 Minutes!)
I made this Gochu Japchae for my husband’s birthday, and was surprised by how easy it was! It looks impressive, but it’s actually not difficult to make at all. Wouldn’t this be perfect for a dinner party or when guests are over?!
Main Ingredients- 3 bell peppers (use a variety of colors for a vibrant dish)
- 4 shiitake mushrooms
- 1/4 onion
- 200g pork strips (for stir-frying/japchae)
- 6 steamed buns (hua juan)
Seasoning Ingredients- 2 Tbsp chili oil
- 2 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of toasted sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp chili oil
- 2 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of toasted sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, fill a steamer pot with water and bring it to a boil. Place the steamed buns (hua juan) on the steamer rack and steam for about 10 minutes until they are warm and fluffy.
Step 2
Prepare all your vegetables. Remove the seeds from the bell peppers and onion, and then slice them into thin strips. Trim the stems from the shiitake mushrooms and slice them to your liking. Gently pat the pork strips dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
Step 3
Heat a frying pan over high heat. Add the pork strips and stir-fry quickly until they are cooked through. Use chopsticks or a spatula to separate the pork pieces as they cook to prevent clumping. Once the pork is almost done, temporarily remove it from the pan and set aside.
Step 4
In the same pan used for the pork, add the prepared onion, bell peppers, and shiitake mushrooms. Stir-fry over high heat until the vegetables are slightly softened but still retain a crisp texture. Add the reserved cooked pork back into the pan and continue to stir-fry everything together.
Step 5
Now, add all the seasoning ingredients: chili oil, oyster sauce, and soy sauce. Stir-fry quickly to coat all the ingredients evenly. The chili oil will add a pleasant heat, and the oyster sauce brings a rich umami flavor. Season with a pinch of salt to taste, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds for a final touch.
Step 6
Arrange the warm, steamed buns on a serving plate. Generously spoon the delicious Gochu Japchae over the buns. This vibrant and flavorful dish looks stunning and is ready to impress your guests!
