Main Ingredients for Silkworm Pupae Stew
  • 1 can (approx. 130g) prepared silkworm pupae
  • A small amount of green onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Cheongyang chili pepper, finely chopped
  • A little bit of red chili pepper, finely chopped (for garnish)
  • 2/3 cup water (using the pupae can as a measure)
  • A pinch of black pepper

Flavor Enhancers
  • 1/3 Tbsp anchovy sauce (or soup soy sauce)
  • A small amount of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, to taste)
  • A sprinkle of sesame seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables that will add flavor to your silkworm pupae stew. Wash the green onion, Cheongyang chili pepper, and red chili pepper thoroughly, then finely chop them. If you prefer it spicier, feel free to increase the amount of Cheongyang chili pepper. Also, have your minced garlic ready.

Step 2

Now, it’s time to cook the pupae. Pour the entire contents of the silkworm pupae can, including the liquid, into a small pot or a ttukbaegi (Korean earthenware pot). Add 2/3 cup of water, measured using the empty pupae can, and then add the minced garlic. Bring this mixture to a boil over high heat.

Step 3

Once the stew reaches a gentle boil, reduce the heat to medium-low. Season the stew with 1/3 tablespoon of anchovy sauce (or soy sauce for soup if anchovy sauce is unavailable). Immediately add the chopped green onion, Cheongyang chili pepper, and red chili pepper. Let it simmer for another moment before turning off the heat. Finally, sprinkle in some gochugaru according to your preference, followed by a pinch of black pepper and a scattering of sesame seeds. Your delicious Silkworm Pupae Stew is ready to be enjoyed!
