Apple Pie Base Ingredients

  • 1 medium apple
  • 2 dried persimmons (seedless)
  • 10 wonton wrappers

Flavor Enhancing Seasonings and Ingredients

  • 12g unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • Pinch of cinnamon powder
  • 3 Tbsp sarsaparilla soda (or clear soda)
  • 2/3 Tbsp lemon juice
  • Starch slurry (1/2 Tbsp cornstarch + 1 Tbsp water)

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare your wonton wrappers, apples, and dried persimmons. Also, gather your cinnamon powder, butter, and starch slurry for added flavor. To make the starch slurry, mix 1/2 Tbsp of cornstarch with 1 Tbsp of water in a small bowl and set aside.

Wash the medium-sized apple thoroughly. Dice it finely, keeping the skin on for extra texture and nutrients. Prepare the dried persimmons by removing any seeds and chopping them into small pieces.

Melt 12g of butter in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Once melted, add 1 Tbsp of sugar and stir well. Then, add the diced apples and sauté for about 2 minutes, just until they soften slightly.

Add the chopped dried persimmons, 3 Tbsp of sarsaparilla soda, and a pinch of cinnamon powder to the sautéed apples. Cook together until well combined. When the mixture thickens slightly, gradually add the prepared starch slurry (1 Tbsp at a time) while stirring until it reaches your desired consistency. Finally, stir in 2/3 Tbsp of lemon juice, mix quickly, and turn off the heat. Let this apple filling cool completely.

If you want to speed up the cooling process for the apple filling, place the bowl containing the hot filling into a larger bowl filled with ice water. This double-boiling method will help it cool down much faster.

Lay one wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place a generous spoonful of the cooled apple filling in the center of the wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper with a little water; this will help them stick together securely.

Fold the wonton wrapper in half to create a semi-circle, similar to how you would fold a dumpling. Press the edges firmly together to seal the filling inside, ensuring it won’t leak out during cooking. You can use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative finish and extra security.

Repeat this process with the remaining wonton wrappers and filling. You should end up with approximately 10 individual apple pies. Set the shaped pies aside while you prepare for frying.

Heat enough cooking oil in a deep pan or pot over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the shaped wonton wrapper apple pies into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, turning them occasionally.

Once golden brown and crispy, remove the fried apple pies from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil. Your delicious and crispy wonton wrapper apple pies are now ready to be enjoyed! They are best served warm.
