Main Ingredients- 2.5 Garae-tteok (Korean long rice cakes) (approx. 355g)
- 1 packet (20g) Mixed nuts
- Cooking oil (enough to fry or sauté the rice cakes)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Soften the Rice Cakes: If using frozen garae-tteok, soak them in cold water for about 10 minutes to thaw. Alternatively, you can blanch them in boiling water for about 2 minutes. This process makes the rice cakes softer and easier to slice or sauté.
Step 2
Slice the Rice Cakes: Once softened, slice the garae-tteok into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm long). Slicing them too thinly might cause them to break easily when making the gangjeong, so aim for a moderate thickness.
Step 3
Sauté Rice Cakes & Add Nuts: Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced rice cakes and sauté until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside. Once the rice cakes are somewhat cooked, add the mixed nuts and sauté briefly to add a nutty aroma.
Step 4
Add Sauce & Toss: When the rice cakes and nuts are nicely browned, reduce the heat to low. Add 2 tablespoons of Beef Jinmi (or soy sauce) and 1 tablespoon of oligodang (or corn syrup). Quickly toss everything together to ensure the sauce coats the rice cakes and nuts evenly. This will create a delicious Tteokgangjeong. Be careful not to overcook, as the rice cakes can become hard.
