Main Ingredients- 1/2 small sweet pumpkin
- 3 Tbsp tempura flour
- 6 Tbsp ice-cold water
For Frying- Plenty of frying oil (about 5cm deep)
- Plenty of frying oil (about 5cm deep)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the small sweet pumpkin thoroughly under running water and set aside.
Step 2
Cut the pumpkin in half and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy insides. (Tip: If the pumpkin is too hard to cut, microwave it for about 30 seconds. This will make it much easier to slice.)
Step 3
Slice the deseeded pumpkin thinly, about 0.5cm thick, into bite-sized pieces. If the slices are too thick, they might take longer to cook through.
Step 4
Place the tempura flour (3 Tbsp) into a resealable plastic bag. Add the sliced pumpkin and shake the bag well to lightly coat each piece with flour. The goal is a thin, even coating.
Step 5
In a bowl, combine the tempura flour (3 Tbsp) and ice-cold water (6 Tbsp) to create the batter. (Tip: Adding a few ice cubes to the batter will make the coating extra crispy! The batter consistency should not be too thin; it’s good when the flour is just slightly clumped.)
Step 6
Dip the flour-coated pumpkin pieces into the batter, ensuring they are evenly coated on all sides. You can gently shake off any excess batter.
Step 7
Heat a generous amount of frying oil in a pot to about 170-180°C (340-350°F). Carefully add the battered pumpkin pieces one by one. Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides. (Tip: Avoid overcrowding the pot, as this can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy fries.)
Step 8
Once golden and crispy, remove the sweet pumpkin fries and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Enjoy these delicious, homemade sweet pumpkin fries that are crispy, savory, and sweet – a perfect treat that rivals any snack shop!
