Main Ingredients

  • 1 squid (cleaned and prepared)
  • 1 handful of bean sprouts (approx. 150g)
  • 1/4 head of cabbage
  • 1/4 carrot
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 chili pepper (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by preparing your vegetables. Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. Slice the carrot and onion into similar widths. Cut the green onion into long, thick pieces. Finely chop the chili pepper. Rinse the bean sprouts under cold water and drain them well in a colander. (Tip: Prepping the vegetables beforehand will save you time during cooking!)

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped green onions and slowly stir-fry until fragrant and the oil has a lovely onion aroma. (If using frozen green onions, you can add them directly without thawing.)

Step 2

Step 3

Once the aroma of the green onions is noticeable and the infused oil is ready, add the prepared squid to the pan. Stir-fry and add 0.5 Tbsp of sugar to enhance the squid’s natural sweetness and tenderness. (Using thawed squid will help maintain a tender texture.)

Step 3

Step 4

As the squid begins to cook, add 0.5 Tbsp of gochujang and 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic. Stir-fry to combine. If the mixture seems too dry, add 3 Tbsp of water to loosen it up.

Step 4

Step 5

Next, add 3.5 Tbsp of soy sauce and 2 Tbsp of gochugaru. Stir well to ensure all the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the squid and vegetables. Cook until a rich, spicy, and savory sauce is formed.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the sauce has coated the squid nicely, add all the prepared cabbage, carrot, onion, and bean sprouts to the pan. Stir-fry quickly over high heat to keep the vegetables crisp and fresh. Be careful not to overcook them so they retain their satisfying crunch!

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, just before turning off the heat, drizzle a little sesame oil over the stir-fry. This will add a wonderful nutty aroma and enhance the overall flavor.

Step 7

Step 8

Your Squid and Bean Sprout Stir-Fry is ready! Look at how appetizing it is with the plump squid and vibrant vegetables. The combination of tender squid and crunchy bean sprouts is truly delightful, reminiscent of a steamed bean sprout dish.

Step 8

Step 9

With plenty of squid and bean sprouts, this dish makes an excellent accompaniment to drinks. It’s also delicious served over a bowl of rice as a quick and satisfying meal. You can even transform any leftovers into a tasty fried rice!

Step 9

Step 10

Serve this delicious stir-fry over hot steamed rice. A big spoonful is incredibly satisfying – the spicy and sweet sauce perfectly complements the textures. It’s a true ‘rice thief’!

Step 10

Step 11

If you have perilla leaves (깻잎), try wrapping the stir-fry in them for an extra burst of freshness. Even wrapped in seaweed (김), it’s absolutely delicious! This is a simple yet incredibly flavorful dish, so why not give this Squid and Bean Sprout Stir-Fry a try?
