Main Ingredients
  • 1/2 block firm tofu (approx. 150-200g)
  • A very small amount of onion (finely minced)
  • 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour or frying powder

Dipping Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • A little red chili (1/4, seeds removed and very finely minced, or a pinch of chili flakes)
  • A little onion (1 Tbsp, very finely minced)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, press the tofu with paper towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Removing excess water helps the tofu fry up crispy and prevents it from breaking apart. Cut the tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5-2cm thick. Finely mince the onion. Sprinkle the flour (or frying powder) evenly over the cut tofu and lightly coat both sides. Avoid using too much flour, as this can make the tofu taste dry; a thin coating is best.

Step 2

Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the floured tofu pieces into the pan. Gently press the minced onion onto the surface of the tofu. Pressing lightly helps the onion adhere well to the tofu.

Step 3

Cook the tofu, ensuring it doesn’t stick to the pan by managing the heat, until it’s golden brown and crispy on both sides. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side. You’ll know it’s done when it’s fragrant and the surface feels firm to the touch with a skewer. Be mindful of the heat to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.

Step 4

While the tofu is cooking, let’s prepare the dipping sauce. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, finely minced red chili (or chili flakes), and finely minced onion. Mix well. You can add a tiny pinch of sugar for a hint of sweetness, or use a bit of green chili for a spicier kick, according to your preference.

Step 5

Transfer the beautifully pan-fried tofu to a serving plate. Dip the crispy tofu into the delicious sauce and enjoy! This dish is best served immediately while warm. Enjoy it as a delightful side dish!
