Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu (approx. 300g)
  • 1/2 cup pancake mix (approx. 50g)
  • Generous amount of cooking oil (approx. 5-6 Tbsp)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare one block of tofu. Since excess moisture can make the pancakes soggy, it’s crucial to pat the tofu dry thoroughly with paper towels. Once dry, cut the tofu into pieces suitable for pan-frying, about 1.5cm thick. Avoid cutting them too thin, as they might break apart.

Step 1

Step 2

Spread 1/2 cup of pancake mix evenly on a tray or plate. Place the cut tofu pieces onto the mix and gently press to coat both sides evenly with the pancake mix. If too much mix adheres, it can taste doughy, so it’s good to lightly shake off any excess.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Plenty of oil is key to ensuring the tofu fries up crispy without sticking. Once the oil is sufficiently hot, carefully place the coated tofu pieces into the pan. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can cause them to stick together; it’s best to fry them in batches of 2-3.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the bottom side of the tofu begins to turn golden brown, use a spatula to carefully flip them over. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until both sides are a beautiful golden-brown and the edges look nicely crispy. You can gently shake the pan or poke with chopsticks to check for doneness.

Step 4

Step 5

Transfer the perfectly fried tofu pancakes to a plate or tray lined with paper towels. This step helps to absorb any excess oil, ensuring they stay wonderfully crispy. They are best enjoyed immediately while warm. For an extra touch, consider serving with a simple dipping sauce made from soy sauce, a splash of vinegar, and a pinch of chili flakes.
