Main Ingredients

  • 1 block (approx. 300-400g) Tofu
  • 2 Tbsp Perilla Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Cooking Oil

Sauce Ingredients

  • 0.5 Tbsp Salt
  • 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 4 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Perilla Oil
  • 0.5 Tbsp Sesame Seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Scallion
  • 1 Cheongyang Pepper (optional, minced)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, it’s crucial to thoroughly remove the excess water from the tofu. Use paper towels to gently pat the tofu surfaces dry. Then, cut the tofu into thick, elongated pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick. Lightly sprinkle the salt evenly on both sides of the cut tofu pieces to season them from the inside. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to allow the salt to penetrate.

Step 1

Step 2

While the tofu is resting, let’s prepare the flavorful sauce. In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp Gochugaru, 1 Tbsp perilla oil, 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 0.5 Tbsp sesame seeds, and 1 Tbsp minced scallion. Mix everything well. If you prefer a spicier kick, finely mince 1 Cheongyang pepper and add it to the mixture for an extra layer of flavor. This sauce can be spooned over the tofu or used as a dipping sauce once the tofu is fried.

Step 2

Step 3

Now it’s time to pan-fry the tofu until golden brown and delicious. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add 2 Tbsp of perilla oil and 1 Tbsp of cooking oil. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place the seasoned tofu pieces in a single layer. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes per side, flipping once, until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside, while remaining tender inside. Serve hot with a bowl of rice, or with the prepared dipping sauce on the side for an incredibly satisfying meal!
