Crispy Homemade Dried Shrimp Crackers (Saewoo-gwang)
DIY Dried Shrimp Snacks, Inspired by Unexpected Finds
While preparing to make french fries, I rediscovered dried shrimp in the fridge! This discovery sparked a craving for crispy shrimp crackers, so I decided to make them right away. The unique savory and salty flavor of dried shrimp makes these perfect as a beer snack or for kids. The recipe is incredibly simple, so let’s get started!
Key Ingredients- Dried shrimp, approx. 100g
- 1 Tbsp tempura flour (or all-purpose flour)
- Generous amount of cooking oil (for frying)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the dried shrimp. Place them in a sieve and rinse lightly under running water. This helps remove any dust and ensures they fry up extra crispy. After rinsing, pat them thoroughly dry with paper towels to remove all moisture.
Step 2
Transfer the dried shrimp, now completely dry, into a clean mixing bowl.
Step 3
Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of tempura flour evenly over the dried shrimp in the bowl.
Step 4
Gently toss the shrimp with your hands so the flour coats them evenly. Be careful not to crush the shrimp; a light coating is key to achieving crispiness.
Step 5
Now, prepare for frying. Pour a generous amount of cooking oil into a deep frying pan or pot and heat it over medium heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a tiny bit of the coated shrimp; it should sizzle and float up immediately.
Step 6
Once the oil is properly heated, carefully add the flour-coated dried shrimp to the pan. Add them one by one to avoid splattering hot oil.
Step 7
Fry the shrimp for about 1 to 2 minutes, or until they turn a golden-brown color and the vigorous bubbling subsides. You’ll notice the popping sounds reduce as they cook through.
Step 8
Using a sieve or slotted spoon, carefully remove the fried shrimp from the oil. It’s important to drain them immediately to prevent them from overcooking in the residual heat.
Step 9
Place the drained shrimp on a tray lined with paper towels, spreading them out in a single layer. This allows any excess oil to be absorbed and helps them cool down to achieve maximum crispiness. Once completely cooled, your delicious homemade dried shrimp crackers are ready to enjoy!
