Sandwich Ingredients

  • 3 slices of bread
  • 2 slices of ham
  • 2 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Batter & Sauce

  • 1 Tbsp strawberry jam
  • 1 Tbsp mustard
  • 2 Tbsp breadcrumbs
  • A pinch of parsley flakes
  • 1 Tbsp powdered sugar (for dusting)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, trim off the crusts from all three slices of bread. Then, spread 1 tablespoon of strawberry jam evenly on one slice of bread. Layer one slice of cheddar cheese and one slice of ham on top of the jam. Place another slice of bread on top. Now, spread 1 tablespoon of mustard on this second slice of bread. Add the remaining slice of cheddar cheese and the other slice of ham. Finally, top it off with the third slice of bread to complete the sandwich. The layering order is: bread – jam – cheese – ham – bread – mustard – cheese – ham – bread.

In a wide bowl, crack one egg and whisk it with a pinch of parsley flakes. Dip both sides of the assembled sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s well coated. Next, generously coat the egg-dipped sandwich with breadcrumbs, creating a crispy exterior. Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Carefully place the breadcrumb-coated sandwich in the pan and cook until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Flip and continue cooking until the inside is warm and the cheese is melted.

Once the sandwich is golden brown and crispy, carefully remove it from the pan and place it on a wire rack or plate to cool slightly. It’s best to let it cool for a minute or two before cutting to prevent the melted cheese from oozing out too much. To serve, use a sharp knife to cut the sandwich into four equal pieces by making a cross shape (cutting horizontally and vertically).
