Essential Ingredients for Seasoned Bean Sprouts
  • 1 bag of crispy bean sprouts (approx. 300g)
  • 1 stalk of scallion or the white part of a green onion
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce (Guk-ganjang or Yangjo-ganjang can also be used)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (adds a nutty aroma)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic (fresh garlic recommended)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish and nutty flavor)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare one bag of bean sprouts. Rinse them thoroughly under running water multiple times to ensure they are clean. Washing them carefully will help remove any characteristic ‘fishy’ smell and enhance their crispiness.

Step 2

While washing the bean sprouts, gently pick out any dirty leaves or spoiled sprouts. This preparation step will make the finished seasoned bean sprouts look much neater and more appetizing.

Step 3

In a pot, add enough water to cover the bean sprouts and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water boils, get ready to add the bean sprouts.

Step 4

As soon as the water starts boiling, add the prepared bean sprouts to the pot and cover it. Boil for about 5-7 minutes only. Be careful not to overcook them, or they will become mushy and lose their crispiness! You’ll know they’re done when they turn slightly translucent and you can smell them cooking. Then, turn off the heat.

Step 5

While the bean sprouts are boiling, prepare your scallions or green onions. If using scallions, chop them finely. If using green onions, chop the white parts thinly. The fresh aroma of the onion will further enhance the flavor of your seasoned bean sprouts.

Step 6

Once boiled, drain the bean sprouts thoroughly in a colander. Draining them while hot helps maintain their crispiness, and removing excess water prevents the dish from becoming too watery and bland.

Step 7

Now it’s time to season. Place the drained bean sprouts in a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Note that using Guk-ganjang (soup soy sauce) will result in a darker color.

Step 8

Drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma. Using high-quality sesame oil will significantly improve the flavor.

Step 9

Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and the chopped scallions or green onions. Be mindful not to add too much garlic, as it can sometimes impart a bitter taste.

Step 10

Gently mix the bean sprouts with the prepared seasoning ingredients. It’s important to toss them gently so you don’t mash the bean sprouts. Taste and add a little more soy sauce if needed.

Step 11

Transfer the well-seasoned bean sprouts to a serving dish. Presenting them neatly will make them look even more delicious.

Step 12

Finally, sprinkle a generous amount of sesame seeds on top for added flavor, and your delicious seasoned bean sprouts are ready! Enjoy them with a warm bowl of rice. ^^
