Crispy and Delicious Potato Pancakes (Gamjajeon)
Easy Homemade Potato Pancakes Recipe

Introducing potato pancakes made with freshly grated potatoes, offering a wonderfully savory and crispy texture. They are perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, simple to make with few ingredients, making them a great snack or light meal accompaniment, especially with makgeolli (Korean rice wine).
Main Ingredients- 5 medium potatoes
- 2 Tbsp pancake mix (buchim garu)
- Generous amount of canola oil (for frying)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare 5 medium-sized potatoes. Medium-sized ones work best for this recipe.

Step 2
Using a peeler, carefully remove the skin from the potatoes.

Step 3
Wash the peeled potatoes thoroughly under running water. Make sure to wash them meticulously to remove any dirt.

Step 4
Instead of using a blender, we’ll be grating the potatoes by hand using a grater. Slowly grate the potatoes. If there’s too much excess water, you can drain it off.

Step 5
To the grated potatoes, add 2 tablespoons of pancake mix (buchim garu). The pancake mix will help absorb the potato’s moisture, leading to an even crispier texture.

Step 6
Mix the pancake mix and potatoes thoroughly until well combined. Taste the mixture and add a pinch of salt if desired for enhanced flavor. Seasoning makes a big difference!

Step 7
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of canola oil. Plenty of oil is key to preventing the potato pancakes from burning and ensuring they turn a beautiful golden brown.

Step 8
Using a ladle or tablespoon, scoop about 1 tablespoon of the batter and place it onto the hot pan. Adding the batter to a sufficiently heated pan will prevent sticking and result in nicely formed pancakes.

Step 9
After placing the batter, gently press down with the back of your spoon to spread it into a thin, round shape. Avoid making them too thick, as this ensures they cook through evenly and become crispy.

Step 10
Once the edges of the potato pancake start to turn golden brown, flip it over and cook the other side until it’s also golden and crispy. Aim for about 3-4 minutes per side.

Step 11
Once both sides are cooked to a tempting golden color, they are ready! Serve immediately while warm to enjoy the perfect potato pancakes – crispy on the outside and wonderfully tender on the inside.
