  • Occasion : Bar food
  • Cooking : Deep-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 1 thick slice of ham (approx. 1.5-2 cm thick)
  • 5 Tbsp tempura flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 fresh egg
  • 3 Tbsp panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil (for frying), as needed

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the ham. Slice the ham into 4 equal pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm thick. It’s important to cut it to a suitable thickness, as slicing it too thin might cause it to break apart during frying.

Step 1

Step 2

In a separate bowl, crack the egg and whisk it until smooth. Ensure the egg mixture is well beaten and lump-free.

Step 2

Step 3

Coat the sliced ham evenly with tempura flour on all sides. Applying a thin layer of flour helps achieve a crispier texture. If too much flour adheres, the coating might become too thick.

Step 3

Step 4

Dip the floured ham into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Make sure the entire piece of ham is well covered with the egg wash.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, coat the ham with panko breadcrumbs. Place the egg-coated ham on the panko and gently press down with your hands to adhere the breadcrumbs thoroughly on all sides. Applying breadcrumbs generously will result in a crispier finish when fried.

Step 5

Step 6

Now it’s time to fry the ham katsu. Pour enough vegetable oil into a pan so that the ham is about half-submerged. Heat the oil over medium heat. Once the oil is adequately hot, carefully place the breaded ham katsu into the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Ensure even cooking by flipping them during the frying process.

Step 6

Step 7

Once perfectly fried, transfer the ham katsu to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. It’s best enjoyed while warm! You can serve it with your favorite sauce, such as tonkatsu sauce, ketchup, or mustard, for an enhanced flavor experience.

Step 7

Step 8

Arrange the finished ham katsu beautifully on a plate and enjoy! This dish is sure to impress everyone with its special flavor on any occasion.
