Taste the delicious fried kelp snack (Twikak) that brings back precious childhood memories! By frying kelp until crispy and lightly dusting it with sugar, you’ll create an irresistible snack that’s both crunchy and savory. It’s a wonderful way to revisit nostalgic flavors!
Ingredients- Dried kelp
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Sugar (to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the dried kelp. Cut it into approximately 10cm x 10cm squares for easy handling and eating. If the pieces are too large, they can be difficult to fry or consume, so cutting them into manageable sizes is recommended.
Step 2
Before frying, it’s important to remove the white powder (mannitol) from the surface of the kelp. Gently wipe the surface with a dry kitchen towel or paper towel. Do not wash the kelp with water, as this can remove its natural umami flavor.
Step 3
Now it’s time to fry the kelp. Pour a generous amount of vegetable oil into a pan or pot and preheat it over medium heat. Once the oil is sufficiently hot (you can test by inserting a wooden chopstick; if small bubbles appear around it, the oil is ready), carefully add the prepared kelp pieces. Fry them until they turn a light golden brown on both sides. Be cautious as kelp can burn quickly, so adjusting the heat and frying quickly is key. Once fried, place the kelp on a wire rack to drain any excess oil.
Step 4
While the fried kelp is still warm and the oil has drained, sprinkle sugar evenly over the top according to your preference. The sweetness of the sugar perfectly complements the savory taste of the kelp, creating a delightful flavor combination. This crispy fried kelp is perfect as a snack for children, an accompaniment to beer for adults, or even as a side dish with rice. Relive the joy of packing this popular snack in your lunchbox during your school days!
