Crispy and Aromatic Chives and Onion Salad
Easy Homemade Chives and Onion Salad Recipe
Here’s how to make a delicious chives and onion salad that’s perfect for when you’re lacking appetite. The combination of fresh chives and crisp onions is exceptional, and it wonderfully balances the richness of meat dishes, adding depth of flavor. This recipe is detailed enough for beginners to follow easily.
Main Ingredients- 1 bunch chives (approx. 100g)
- 1/2 medium onion (approx. 100g)
Seasoning- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp anchovy sauce (or fish sauce)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp vinegar (rice or apple cider vinegar recommended)
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp anchovy sauce (or fish sauce)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp vinegar (rice or apple cider vinegar recommended)
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Thinly slice half an onion. If you prefer less pungent flavors or a milder taste, soak the sliced onions in cold water for about 30 minutes, then drain them thoroughly. This step removes the sharp bite of the onion, making it much smoother.
Step 2
Wash a generous bunch of fresh chives (about 100g) and pat them dry. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm long (roughly two finger-widths). Cutting them too short might reduce the pleasant crunch.
Step 3
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced onions and the chopped chives. Add all the seasoning ingredients: 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons gochugaru, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1 tablespoon anchovy sauce, 1 tablespoon sugar, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
Step 4
Gently toss everything together, being careful not to mash the chives. Using chopsticks or a spatula to mix lightly will help maintain the chives’ crisp texture. Aim for an even coating of the dressing on all ingredients.
Step 5
Your delicious chives and onion salad is ready! This dish is especially wonderful served alongside rich meat dishes. It cleanses your palate, cuts through greasiness, and creates a fantastic harmony of flavors. It’s also a great side dish for rice.
