Main Ingredients- 1 medium onion
- 1 egg
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour (approx. 30g)
- 200g breadcrumbs
- 3 Tbsp olive oil (approx. 30ml)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash and peel the onion. Trim off the root and stem ends. Place the onion flat on its cut side and slice it horizontally into rings about 0.5cm thick. This slicing method will create perfect rings for breading.
Step 2
Gently separate the onion slices into individual rings. Be careful not to break them, as this will help you achieve beautiful shapes. If some rings are too small, you can combine 2-3 rings to form a larger one.
Step 3
Place 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour into a resealable plastic bag or container. The flour acts as the base coating, helping the other layers adhere and become crispy.
Step 4
Close the bag securely and shake it vigorously with the onion rings inside. This ensures each ring is lightly and evenly coated with flour. Shaking thoroughly is key to prevent clumps and ensure even coverage.
Step 5
Remove the flour-coated onion rings and gently tap off any excess flour. Too much flour can make the coating feel heavy, so a light shake will result in a crispier finish. This step enhances the crispiness of the final product.
Step 6
In a separate bowl, crack 1 egg and whisk it well with a fork or whisk. The egg wash will act as a binder, helping the breadcrumbs stick to the flour-coated onion.
Step 7
Spread a generous amount of breadcrumbs onto a wide plate or tray. Have your whisked egg ready next to it. You are now all set to bread your onion rings.
Step 8
Dip the flour-coated onion rings into the egg wash, ensuring they are fully coated on both sides. Make sure the egg wash covers the entire surface of each onion ring.
Step 9
Immediately transfer the egg-washed onion rings onto the prepared breadcrumbs. Gently press the rings into the breadcrumbs to help them adhere well. Ensure the entire surface is covered.
Step 10
Roll the onion rings in the breadcrumbs, gently pressing to coat them evenly. A good layer of breadcrumbs will create a wonderfully crispy and appealing texture. Make sure to coat them thoroughly.
Step 11
Arrange the breaded onion rings in a single layer in your air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t overlap. Drizzle 3 tablespoons of olive oil evenly over the onion rings. This adds to the crispiness and flavor. Cook in a preheated air fryer at 180℃ (350℉) for 15 minutes.
Step 12
After 15 minutes, carefully remove the air fryer basket and flip the onion rings. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes at 180℃ (350℉), or until both sides are golden brown and perfectly crispy. Your delicious onion rings are now ready to enjoy!
