Main Ingredients

  • 1 bag fresh bean sprouts (approx. 300g)
  • 1/2 fresh green onion

Seasoning

  • 1 Tbsp soup soy sauce (using Korean traditional soy sauce ‘Guk-ganjang’ adds umami!)
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic (fresh garlic provides a more intense aroma)
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil (adds a nutty fragrance)
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar (adjust sweetness to your preference)
  • 1/2 Tbsp salt (add more or less to taste)
  • 1-2 pinches black pepper (optional, adjust to taste)
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly 2-3 times under running water to remove any debris. Washing them carefully ensures you get the freshest, purest taste of the bean sprouts.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, we’ll cook the bean sprouts without adding any water to the pot. This method uses only the natural moisture released by the sprouts, keeping them wonderfully crisp. Place only the bean sprouts into the pot.

Step 2

Step 3

Cover the pot with a lid and steam over low heat for 7 minutes. Keeping the lid on traps steam, allowing the sprouts to cook gently and retain their moisture. Be mindful of the heat to prevent them from burning.

Step 3

Step 4

While the sprouts are steaming, split the green onion in half lengthwise, then thinly slice it crosswise. Slicing them thinly helps their flavor infuse well into the seasoning.

Step 4

Step 5

In a separate small bowl, combine all the seasoning ingredients except for the sesame seeds: soup soy sauce, minced garlic, sesame oil, sugar, salt, and pepper.

Step 5

Step 6

Using a spatula or spoon, mix the seasoning ingredients thoroughly to create a well-blended sauce. This ensures the seasoning will evenly coat the bean sprouts when you mix them later.

Step 6

Step 7

After 7 minutes, turn off the heat. Open the lid and use long chopsticks or tongs to gently toss the bean sprouts. This helps ensure they are evenly cooked. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy.

Step 7

Step 8

Once cooked, transfer the bean sprouts to a colander, draining any excess liquid. Let them cool slightly for a bit. Seasoning them while they are too hot can release too much water and reduce their crispiness.

Step 8

Step 9

Add the slightly cooled bean sprouts and the sliced green onions to the bowl with the prepared seasoning. Gently toss them using your hands or a spatula, being careful not to mash the sprouts. The key is to coat them evenly with the sauce.

Step 9

Step 10

Once the bean sprouts and green onions are well mixed with the seasoning, sprinkle in the sesame seeds and give it one final gentle toss. Your delicious and crisp seasoned bean sprouts are now ready to serve!
