  • 2 Shiitake mushrooms
  • 6-7 cloves Garlic
  • 5 strips Bacon
  • 100ml Heavy cream
  • 200ml Whole milk
  • Blanched broccoli, a little
  • 1 knob Butter
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • A little Black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare all the ingredients for your creamy tteokbokki. You’ll need 200g of tteokbokki rice cakes, 1/2 onion, 2 shiitake mushrooms, 6-7 cloves of garlic, 5 strips of bacon, 100ml of heavy cream, 200ml of whole milk, a little blanched broccoli, 1 knob of butter, 1 pinch of salt, and a little black pepper. Prepping your ingredients beforehand will help speed up the cooking process.

Step 1

Step 2

Wash and peel the 1/2 onion, then thinly slice it into strips. Sliced onions will add a natural sweetness as the sauce thickens.

Step 2

Step 3

Peel the 6-7 cloves of garlic and slice them thinly. Slicing the garlic thinly will enhance its flavor profile and help it release a gentle aroma without burning when sautéed.

Step 3

Step 4

Clean the 2 shiitake mushrooms and slice them to a similar thickness as the onions. The chewy texture of the mushrooms pairs wonderfully with the creamy sauce.

Step 4

Step 5

Cut the 5 strips of bacon into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm long. Adding bacon will introduce a savory flavor and umami, making the tteokbokki even more delicious.

Step 5

Step 6

Heat a wide pan over medium heat and add 1 knob of butter. Once the butter is melted, add the thinly sliced garlic and sauté until fragrant. This step infuses the base with a lovely garlic aroma.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the garlic is fragrant, add the sliced onions and sauté until they become translucent. Caramelizing the onions will bring out their natural sweetness.

Step 7

Step 8

Add the sliced shiitake mushrooms and sauté them along with the onions and garlic. Cook until the mushrooms soften slightly.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, add the cut bacon and continue to sauté until the onions are translucent and the bacon is lightly browned. This will meld the flavors of all the ingredients together.

Step 9

Step 10

Pour in 100ml of heavy cream, the key to the rich and creamy sauce. The heavy cream will form the base, creating a smooth and decadent texture.

Step 10

Step 11

Add 200ml of whole milk to balance the richness and create a smoother consistency. You can adjust the amount of milk depending on your desired sauce thickness.

Step 11

Step 12

Add the blanched broccoli florets. Broccoli not only adds color and nutrients but also provides a pleasing textural contrast.

Step 12

Step 13

Add another knob of butter to further enrich the flavor of the cream sauce. The butter will melt, adding gloss and depth to the sauce.

Step 13

Step 14

Once the sauce begins to simmer, add the 200g of tteokbokki rice cakes. Stir gently to prevent them from sticking together, and cook over medium-high heat until the rice cakes are tender and chewy (about 3-5 minutes).

Step 14

Step 15

As the rice cakes cook and the sauce thickens, add 1 pinch of salt to season. Adjust the saltiness carefully, considering the saltiness from the bacon and the rice cakes themselves.

Step 15

Step 16

Finally, add a little black pepper to enhance the flavor and adjust the seasoning. Pepper helps to cut through the richness of the cream sauce and balances the overall taste.

Step 16

Step 17

Serve your warm creamy tteokbokki in a bowl for a beautiful presentation! The photo might not do it justice because it’s a white dish, but the taste is absolutely fantastic!! Highly recommended for a kids’ snack or a special meal!
