Avocado: A Simple Yet Delicious Side Dish for Rice

Creamy Avocado with Perilla Oil and Salt Dip

This might be too simple to call a recipe, but I wanted to share this wonderful tip for avocado lovers! Recently, I made roast beef at home and found myself without any side vegetables. On a whim, I sliced some avocado, thinking it would cut through the richness of the beef. However, it tasted a bit bland on its own. So, I dipped it into the salt, pepper, and perilla oil sauce I was using for the beef, and to my surprise, it was a revelation! My son loved it so much that he started asking for it as a snack, and my family’s love for avocado grew even stronger.

Main Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado

Perilla Oil Dip

  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

I’ve shared how to prepare avocados in other recipes before, but let me walk you through it once more. Avocados have a large, hard seed in the center, similar to a peach pit. Make a lengthwise cut around the seed, then hold the two halves and twist them apart. Carefully insert the tip of your knife into the seed, twist gently, and lift it out.

Step 1

Step 2

Once halved, you can scoop the flesh out with a spoon and slice it on a cutting board. However, if you want to avoid extra washing up just for the avocado, I recommend scoring the flesh inside the skin first, then scooping it out. If you’re new to this, it might be easier to scoop out the flesh first and then slice it with a knife on a plate.

Step 2

Step 3

While many people dip meat in a salt, pepper, and sesame oil mixture, we often use salt, pepper, and perilla oil at home. For this dish, using ‘perilla oil’ is crucial! The nutty and rich aroma of perilla oil pairs exceptionally well with the creamy texture of the avocado.

Step 3

Step 4

For a neat presentation and easy serving, you can place the avocado halves and the perilla oil dip separately, allowing everyone to serve themselves.

Step 4

Step 5

Alternatively, for an even simpler approach, you can generously drizzle the perilla oil dip directly onto the avocado flesh with a spoon right before serving. It’s quick, easy, and absolutely delicious!
