Inari sushi used to be just a ‘filler’ option for me at restaurants. However, during my time living in Europe, it became a lifesaver for my children’s lunchbox dilemmas! After making it many times, I’ve developed some handy techniques. Today, I’m sharing how to make incredibly delicious crab stick inari sushi with a delightful hint of wasabi. It’s perfect as a satisfying meal or a special treat!

Main Ingredients

  • Inari Sushi Kit (for 4 servings, contains 32 pieces of fried tofu pouches)
  • 700g cooked white rice (kept warm)

Crab Salad Filling Ingredients

  • 150g imitation crab sticks (kani)
  • 2 Tbsp finely minced onion
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp honey mustard sauce
  • 1 tsp wasabi paste (adjust to taste)
  • Pinch of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

I’m using a popular No Brand Inari Sushi Kit for this recipe. It comes with 3 packs each of seasoned fried tofu pouches, sushi vinegar seasoning, and seasoned fried vegetables. Since we’re making 4 servings today, I’ll use 2 packs of each component. First, let’s cook fluffy rice. Add water to your white rice in a 1:1 ratio and cook until it’s firm and separated.

While the rice is cooking, let’s prepare the star of our inari sushi: the crab salad filling! Take the 150g of imitation crab sticks and shred them finely along their natural grain.

Add 2 tablespoons of finely minced onion to the shredded crab. Then, mix in 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise for creaminess and 1 tablespoon of honey mustard sauce for a touch of sweetness and tang.

Now, for that exciting kick! Add 1 teaspoon of wasabi paste for a gentle spicy note, and a pinch of black pepper for added aroma. Feel free to adjust the amount of wasabi to your preference.

Using a spatula or spoon, mix all the ingredients together thoroughly. You’ve now created a delicious crab salad filling that’s both savory and pleasantly spicy!

Take your approximately 700g of warm, freshly cooked rice. Sprinkle 2 packs of the sushi vinegar seasoning and 2 packs of the seasoned fried vegetables from the kit evenly over the rice.

For an extra layer of flavor, I like to add a little bit of the liquid that comes with the fried tofu pouches. This adds a subtle savory depth to the rice.

Gently squeeze the seasoned fried tofu pouches (from the kit) with your hands to remove excess liquid. Be careful not to squeeze too hard, as this could tear the delicate tofu.

And there you have it! All the components for our crab stick inari sushi are ready. The final step is simply to fill the seasoned tofu pouches with the delicious mixture. How easy is that?

Carefully open each piece of fried tofu. Spoon about half a tablespoon of the crab salad filling into the pouch. Be generous with the filling for the best flavor!

Gently add the seasoned rice on top of the crab salad. Press down lightly with your fingers to shape the sushi. And voilà! Your flavorful crab stick and wasabi inari sushi is complete. Enjoy these beautifully presented and incredibly tasty treats!
