Main Ingredients

  • 1 bowl of cooked rice (approx. 200g)
  • 100g ground beef
  • 100g cabbage
  • 1/5 carrot (approx. 20g)
  • 1/5 zucchini (approx. 30g)
  • 3 cups water (approx. 600ml)

Cooking Instructions

First, prepare the vegetables for the porridge. Wash the cabbage, carrot, and zucchini thoroughly, then finely mince them. Minced vegetables will blend better with the porridge and create a smoother texture.

It’s important to eliminate any gamey odor from the ground beef. In a bowl, combine the 100g of ground beef with 1 Tbsp of cooking wine or mirin and mix gently. Let it sit for a moment. Then, season lightly with a pinch of salt and pepper. Be careful not to add too much, as it can make the porridge too salty.

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-low heat. Add the seasoned ground beef and stir-fry until the color changes and it’s no longer pink. Cook just until the meat is browned to prevent it from becoming tough.

Once the beef is partially cooked, add the minced carrot and zucchini to the pan. Stir-fry together with the beef for about 1-2 minutes until the vegetables are well combined.

After stir-frying the vegetables and meat, pour 3 cups (approx. 600ml) of water into a pot and bring it to a boil. Bring it to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat slightly once it starts simmering.

When the water is boiling vigorously, add the 1 bowl of cooked rice (approx. 200g). Stir well to break up the rice, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer gently. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.

As the rice breaks down and the porridge thickens and becomes sticky, add the minced cabbage. Continue to simmer for another short while after adding the cabbage. Simmer for only about 2-3 minutes more so the cabbage retains a slight crispness and doesn’t become too mushy. Season with salt to your taste at this point.

Just before the porridge is done, turn off the heat and drizzle about two rounds of sesame oil over the top for added aroma. Gently mix it in, and your delicious Beef and Cabbage Porridge is ready!
