Main Ingredients- 5 sticks of imitation crab meat (surimi)
- 5 strips of pickled radish (danmuji, for kimbap)
- About 8 green chili peppers
- 15 pieces of block ham (about finger length)
- 15 toothpicks or small skewers
Batter & Seasoning- 150ml of Korean pancake mix (buchim garu)
- 2000ml water (for the batter)
- 2 eggs (approx. 200ml)
- Generous amount of cooking oil
- 2 pinches of salt
- 150ml of Korean pancake mix (buchim garu)
- 2000ml water (for the batter)
- 2 eggs (approx. 200ml)
- Generous amount of cooking oil
- 2 pinches of salt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all ingredients for skewering. Cut the imitation crab sticks into 3 equal pieces (15 total). Cut the pickled radish strips into 3 equal pieces (15 total). Slice the block ham to a similar length as the crab sticks. For the green chili peppers, slice them in half lengthwise and gently scrape out the seeds. (Leave the seeds in if you prefer more heat.)
Step 2
Thread the ingredients onto the toothpicks or skewers in the following order: imitation crab stick, green chili pepper, pickled radish, and ham. Arranging them with alternating colors will make them look more appealing.
Step 3
Spread a thin layer of Korean pancake mix onto a large plate or tray. Lay the prepared skewers side-by-side on top of the flour. Lightly dust the tops of the skewers with more pancake mix, ensuring an even coating. This step helps the batter adhere better.
Step 4
Gently tap the skewers to remove any excess pancake mix. Arrange them neatly so they don’t stick together. Maintaining a good shape at this stage will help them cook evenly and maintain their form.
Step 5
In a bowl, whisk the 2 eggs with 2 pinches of salt to create an egg wash. Dip each prepared skewer into the egg wash, ensuring it’s fully coated.
Step 6
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Carefully place the egg-coated skewers into the hot oil. Pan-fry each side slowly until it turns a beautiful golden brown. Flip when the bottom side is nicely browned.
Step 7
Flip the skewers and cook the other side until it’s also golden brown and cooked through. Once both sides are nicely browned, they are ready. If there’s excess oil, gently press them with a paper towel to absorb it.
Step 8
Your vibrant and delicious colorful skewer jeon is now complete! They taste best when served warm. This dish is a wonderful appetizer or side, perfect for holidays or as a delightful snack.
