Ingredients
  • 5 slices of bread
  • 5 slices of deli ham
  • 5 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 5 lettuce leaves
  • 5 Tbsp strawberry jam

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Wash the cucumber thoroughly and thinly slice it using a vegetable peeler. Slicing them thinly will ensure the rolls are smooth and don’t break when you shape them.

Step 2

Briefly blanch the deli ham slices in boiling water for about 10 seconds. This helps remove any excess saltiness and leaves a cleaner flavor. After blanching, rinse under cold water and pat dry completely.

Step 3

Trim off the crusts from the bread slices with a knife. Using only the soft inner part of the bread will help the rolls shape nicely and make them more enjoyable to eat.

Step 4

Use a rolling pin to flatten the bread slices as thinly as possible. The thinner you roll the bread, the firmer and neater your rolls will be. If you don’t have a rolling pin, a clean glass bottle can also work.

Step 5

Spread a thin, even layer of strawberry jam over the flattened bread slices using the back of a spoon. Then, layer the blanched ham slices and cheddar cheese slices on top.

Step 6

Place the washed lettuce leaves lengthwise over the ham and cheese, followed by the thinly sliced cucumber. Now, roll the sandwich up tightly, similar to how you would roll sushi. It’s important to roll firmly, pulling the ingredients taut to prevent them from falling apart.

Step 7

To ensure the rolled sandwich holds its shape, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, pressing firmly to create a compact cylinder. This will help keep the fillings in place and make slicing easier.

Step 8

For extra stability, wrap the plastic-wrapped roll again with parchment paper or more plastic wrap. This will help it keep its shape, especially if you plan to refrigerate it before serving. Chilling the wrapped roll for about 10 minutes in the refrigerator before slicing will make it firmer and much easier to cut neatly.
