Main Ingredients- Salmon Fillet (for steak) 1 piece (approx. 200-250g)
- Potatoes 3-4 medium-sized
- Lemon 1/2
- Red Onion 1/3
- Tomato 1 (optional, adds freshness)
Seasoning and Sides- Sour Cream 1 Tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- Olive Oil 2 Tbsp (1.5 Tbsp for steak, 0.5 Tbsp for salad)
- Sour Cream 1 Tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- Olive Oil 2 Tbsp (1.5 Tbsp for steak, 0.5 Tbsp for salad)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Boil the Potatoes: In a pot, add 1/3 Tbsp of salt to water and place the peeled potatoes in whole. Boil them until a fork can easily pierce them, about 10-15 minutes. Once cooked, drain them thoroughly in a colander. Keep them warm as they are easier to mash when still hot.

Step 2
Prepare the Salmon: Gently rinse the salmon fillet under cold water to remove any impurities. Pat it completely dry with paper towels. Ensuring the salmon is dry is crucial for achieving a crispy skin when searing.

Step 3
Season the Salmon: Sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over the salmon fillet. Then, brush 1.5 Tbsp of olive oil all over the fish. Coating with oil helps the salmon cook evenly, keeping it moist and enhancing its flavor.

Step 4
Prepare the Side Vegetables: Get your coleslaw, tomato, and red onion ready to serve alongside the salmon steak. Thinly slice the red onion into strips for the salad. Cut the tomato into quarters. (For the coleslaw, you can refer to my previous recipe if you’d like!)

Step 5
Sear the Salmon (Step 1): Heat 1.5 Tbsp of olive oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat. Place the salmon fillet skin-side up first. It’s best to start with medium-high heat rather than high heat.

Step 6
Sear the Salmon (Step 2): Cook the skin side for about 2-3 minutes over medium-high heat until it’s golden brown and crispy. Once the skin is well-cooked, carefully flip the salmon so the flesh side is down. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for another 3-5 minutes, or until the flesh is cooked through but still tender and slightly moist inside. Aim for a medium-rare to medium finish for the best flavor and texture.

Step 7
Plate the Sides (Step 1): On a serving plate, arrange the prepared coleslaw and sliced tomatoes attractively on one side.

Step 8
Plate the Salmon and Sides (Step 2): Add the warm mashed potatoes next to the salmon. Place the sliced red onion and a tablespoon of sour cream beside the steak. A slice of lemon can also be added for a touch of acidity.

Step 9
Extra Tip: If you have olives on hand, try decorating your plate with a cute olive bunny, inspired by Chef Michael! It’s a charming touch that can enhance both the visual appeal and the enjoyment of your salmon steak. ^^
