Chili Shrimp Donburi: Simple One-Bowl Meal
Quick & Delicious Chili Shrimp Donburi – A Satisfying Meal for Tonight!
This is a donburi (rice bowl) dish made easily and simply by utilizing Baek Jong-won’s chili shrimp recipe. You can complete a wonderful meal with frozen shrimp and a few basic seasonings. When served generously over rice, it’s not only satisfying but also appetizing with its sweet and spicy flavor. Even if it’s not a special occasion, enjoy a restaurant-quality chili shrimp donburi conveniently at home!
Main Ingredients- Frozen shrimp, about 20 pieces (approx. 100g)
- 1/3 Onion
- 1 serving Rice
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thaw the frozen shrimp by soaking them in water. After thawing, rinse them once under running water and then thoroughly pat them dry with paper towels. This prevents oil splattering when frying and helps the shrimp cook up crispier. Peel and thinly slice the onion. (While the original recipe doesn’t include onion, you can add a little for extra texture and sweetness.)
Step 2
Now, let’s make the chili sauce. In a small bowl, combine 2 Tbsp ketchup, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp vinegar, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, and 2 Tbsp water. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. (Baek Jong-won’s original recipe adjusts the sauce quantity based on the amount of shrimp, so if you’re using less shrimp, it’s advisable to slightly reduce the sauce ingredients too.)
Step 3
Heat 3 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Once the garlic aroma is released, add the sliced onion and stir-fry until it becomes translucent. (The original Baek Jong-won recipe doesn’t include onion, but stir-frying it at this stage adds sweetness and depth of flavor.)
Step 4
When the onion is somewhat cooked, add the drained shrimp to the pan and stir-fry over high heat until they are lightly browned and plump. Cooking them quickly over high heat is key to achieving a good texture.
Step 5
Once the shrimp are almost cooked, reduce the heat to medium-low. Pour the prepared chili sauce into the pan. Stir and let it simmer until the sauce comes to a boil and coats the ingredients.
Step 6
As the sauce simmers and thickens, if it seems too dry, you can add a very small amount of water. Since I’m making this as a donburi, I added a bit more water to make it saucier for mixing with the rice.
Step 7
When the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, add 1 piece of butter to the pan. The butter will melt, adding a glossy sheen and a smooth, rich flavor to the sauce.
Step 8
Once the butter has completely melted, add a pinch of black pepper for aroma and give everything a gentle stir. This completes your delicious chili shrimp sauce.
Step 9
Serve a generous portion of warm rice in a bowl. Top it with the deliciously cooked chili shrimp. Finally, sprinkle a pinch of parsley flakes for a nice color and aroma. Your impressive Chili Shrimp Donburi is complete! Enjoy your meal.
