Main Ingredients

  • Konjac 500g (1 pack from the supermarket)
  • Water 1.5 cups (approx. 300ml)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare 500g of konjac, usually found as one pack. Supermarket konjac comes in various shapes, so feel free to choose your preference. Briefly boiling the konjac beforehand can help eliminate any unusual odors (optional step).

Step 1

Step 2

Cut the prepared konjac into bite-sized pieces. You can slice it with a knife, or for a more interesting texture, try tearing it with chopsticks.

Step 2

Step 3

For a prettier presentation, make a slit in the center of the konjac piece. Then, thread one end through the slit to create a twisted shape, similar to noodles.

Step 3

Step 4

Twisting the konjac this way makes it visually appealing and enhances the chewy texture. Gently twist it with your fingers to form the shape.

Step 4

Step 5

In this recipe, I’ve chosen to dice the konjac into cubes for easy, bite-sized pieces. Dicing ensures the seasoning is evenly absorbed, leading to a more flavorful dish.

Step 5

Step 6

Now, it’s time to add the seasoning. Pour 5 tablespoons of soy sauce into a pot or pan. Soy sauce provides the salty base and adds a deep umami flavor.

Step 6

Step 7

Add 3 tablespoons of oligosaccharide for sweetness. Oligosaccharide also adds a lovely sheen and a mild, pleasant sweetness. Corn syrup can be used as a substitute.

Step 7

Step 8

Finally, prepare some sesame seeds for a nutty aroma and garnish. Sprinkling them on top of the finished jorim adds visual appeal and enhances the overall flavor.

Step 8

Step 9

Pour in 1.5 cups (approximately 300ml) of water. This water is crucial for allowing the seasoning to fully penetrate the konjac as it simmers. Make sure to use this amount to prevent burning.

Step 9

Step 10

Optionally, you can add a small amount of chopped green onion. The fresh aroma of green onions will further enhance the flavor profile of the konjac jorim. It’s perfectly fine to omit if you don’t have any.

Step 10

Step 11

Place the pot over low heat. Let it simmer slowly until most of the liquid has evaporated and the konjac looks glossy. It’s important to stir occasionally to prevent the konjac from sticking or burning. This process should take about 15-20 minutes.

Step 11

Step 12

Once the seasoning is well absorbed and the konjac is cooked to a glossy finish, turn off the heat. Transfer the delicious Konjac Jorim to a serving plate or a container for storage. Enjoy this delightful dish as a side after it has cooled slightly!
