Ingredients

  • 1 packet glutinous rice donut mix
  • 75ml water
  • 4 Tbsp cooking oil
  • A little black sesame seeds
  • 1 egg

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Today, we’re going to use this convenient mix to create a snack that rivals bakery-bought glutinous rice donuts! Buying them from a bakery can be quite expensive, but this mix is affordable and often comes in two large packs, making it a great value.

Step 1

Step 2

The mix typically includes donut mix and sugar, usually in two separate bags. First, in a large bowl, crack in 1 egg. Instead of water, I prefer using 75ml of milk or soy milk for a richer flavor and softer texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Add 4 tablespoons of cooking oil (or olive oil) and mix lightly. Initially, use a spatula to combine the ingredients. Once the mixture starts to come together, put on a pair of disposable gloves and knead the dough with your hands until it’s smooth and pliable. Kneading well is key to achieving that signature chewy texture.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the dough is ready, you can shape it. Make about 22-23 small, round donuts the size of quail eggs – perfect for little hands or for a classic look. Alternatively, for a bakery-style treat, shape the remaining dough into elongated donuts.

Step 4

Step 5

If you’re making the longer donuts, consider adding a small amount of cream cheese inside before shaping. This will recreate the delicious cream cheese donuts you find at bakeries! You can also experiment with red bean paste or chocolate filling for different flavors.

Step 5

Step 6

Pour about 2cm of cooking oil into a frying pan or pot and heat it over medium-low heat. Once the oil is warm (you can test it by dropping a tiny piece of dough; it should sizzle gently), carefully place the shaped donuts into the oil. Use chopsticks or a skewer to gently roll and turn the donuts as they fry, ensuring they cook evenly and puff up.

Step 6

Step 7

Once the donuts are golden brown and beautifully puffed, remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. You don’t need to submerge the donuts completely in oil; turning them frequently while frying will result in perfectly round donuts. Be mindful of the heat; too high and they’ll burn outside before cooking through.

Step 7

Step 8

Fry the elongated donuts in the same way until they are golden brown.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, sprinkle the donuts generously with the included sugar packet (or use powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar to your preference). These chewy, sweet glutinous rice donuts are now ready to be enjoyed! A sprinkle of black sesame seeds adds a nice visual touch.
