Chewy and Sweet Dried Persimmon (Gammalangi)
Homemade Dried Persimmon: The Perfect Healthy Snack for Kids & Easy Beer Appetizer
Discover the delightful taste of late autumn with homemade dried persimmons (Gammalangi) made from fresh persimmons! Enjoy this naturally sweet and chewy treat as a healthy snack for children or a simple, satisfying appetizer for your next beer. It’s a wonderful way to savor the season’s bounty.
Ingredients- 6-7 ripe, firm persimmons
- Food dehydrator or air fryer
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Select ripe, firm persimmons. Since you’ll be eating them with the skin, wash them thoroughly using baking soda or vinegar to remove any residue.
Step 2
After washing, pat the persimmons completely dry with paper towels. If you prefer not to eat the skin, you can peel them at this stage using a vegetable peeler.
Step 3
Cut each persimmon into 4 wedges. Then, carefully remove the hard stem end and any seeds from the center. Ensure no seeds remain.
Step 4
Slice the wedges into pieces about 1 to 1.5 cm thick. Slicing them too thickly will increase the drying time. If you prefer a softer texture, you can simply cut them into 8 pieces (quarters of quarters) before drying.
Step 5
Arrange the cut persimmon pieces on the trays of your food dehydrator, making sure they don’t overlap. Set the temperature to 60°C (140°F) and dehydrate for 5 to 6 hours. Rotating the pieces halfway through can help ensure even drying.
Step 6
Unlike crisp fresh persimmons, these dried persimmons (Gammalangi) are wonderfully chewy and packed with sweetness! Enjoy the delightful combination of chewy texture and rich flavor. They are ideal as a healthy snack for children and a perfect accompaniment to a cold beer for adults. When persimmons are in season and affordable, make a large batch, portion them, and freeze for a delicious treat you can enjoy year-round!
