Main Ingredients

  • 4 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1/2 onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

To achieve a chewy texture, blanch the square fish cakes in boiling water for about 3 minutes. This process also helps to remove any residual additives and makes the fish cakes softer. Lightly drain the blanched fish cakes and cut them into bite-sized pieces (e.g., 3x4cm).

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the onion, remove the stem, peel it, and then slice it thinly into strips. Slicing them not too thickly will help the sauce to penetrate well and improve the texture when cooked.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a little cooking oil. Add 1 tsp of minced garlic and stir-fry over low heat until fragrant. Stir-frying the garlic gently until aromatic will enhance the overall flavor of the sauce. Be careful not to burn it.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, add the prepared fish cakes and sliced onion to the frying pan and stir-fry together over medium heat. Continue to stir-fry until the onion becomes translucent and the fish cakes are lightly golden brown. This will result in a more delicious texture.

Step 4

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low. Add 2 Tbsp of soy sauce and 1 Tbsp of corn syrup, and stir-fry to coat the fish cakes and onions evenly with the sauce. Using corn syrup will add a glossy sheen and a pleasant sweetness.

Step 5

Step 6

Finally, add 2 Tbsp of water and stir-fry once more until the sauce thickens slightly. Adding water helps prevent the sauce from burning and ensures the fish cakes are moist and flavorful throughout. Just before turning off the heat, sprinkle a little sesame seeds for a nutty aroma and a visually appealing finish to your delicious stir-fried fish cakes.
