Main Ingredients

  • 6 sheets of square fish cakes (1 pack)
  • 1/4 onion
  • A little sliced carrot
  • A little green onion

Seasoning Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (or other liquid sweetener)
  • Sesame oil (to taste)
  • Toasted sesame seeds (to taste)
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 50ml water

Optional Ingredients

  • 1-2 Korean green chilies (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Prepare the Ingredients: Cut the square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm wide. Slice the onion, carrot, and green onion into similar sizes.

Step 1

Step 2

Blanch the Fish Cakes: Briefly blanch the cut fish cakes in boiling water, or pour hot water over them. This step helps remove any excess oil, additives, and sodium used during the manufacturing process, resulting in a cleaner taste and chewier texture.

Step 2

Step 3

Infuse Oil with Garlic: Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic; you want to gently infuse the oil with its aroma.

Step 3

Step 4

Sauté the Vegetables: Once the garlic is fragrant, add the sliced onion and carrot to the pan. Stir-fry them until they are lightly coated with the oil. This process helps bring out the natural sweetness of the vegetables and improves their texture.

Step 4

Step 5

Stir-fry the Fish Cakes and Green Onions: When the vegetables are slightly coated with oil, add the blanched fish cakes (drained of excess water) and the sliced green onions. Stir-fry them together briefly, ensuring the ingredients are well combined.

Step 5

Step 6

Season and Simmer: As the onions start to turn translucent, pour in 50ml of water and reduce the heat to low. Add 3 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp sugar, and 2 Tbsp corn syrup. Stir well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed among the ingredients. Continue to cook until the sauce has reduced to a desirable consistency. Tip: For a spicy kick, add finely chopped Korean green chilies or a pinch of chili powder at this stage and cook them through!

Step 6

Step 7

Finish and Serve: Once the sauce has thickened and coated the ingredients beautifully, drizzle in some sesame oil and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. The nutty aroma of the sesame oil and the crunchy texture of the seeds add the perfect finishing touch to this delightful dish.
