Chewy and Delicious! A Special Side Dish: Stir-fried Salted Sea Mustard Stems Recipe
Discovered at the Supermarket After a Long Time! Flavorful Stir-fried Salted Sea Mustard Stems
I found salted sea mustard stems, which are not commonly seen in supermarkets, after a long time! Excited, I immediately brought them home to make a side dish I haven’t made in ages: Stir-fried Salted Sea Mustard Stems. With their wonderfully chewy texture and savory flavor, they’re perfect as a side with rice or even as a snack with drinks.
Main Ingredients- Salted Sea Mustard Stems 200g
- Green Onion 1/2 cup
- Garlic 5-6 cloves (coarsely minced)
- Carrot a small amount
- Onion 1/5 of an onion
- Perilla Oil (Deulgireum) 1 Tbsp
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The salted sea mustard stems are packed with the ocean’s saltiness. It’s crucial to soak them in water to remove excess salt. Place the sea mustard stems in a generous bowl and cover them with cold water.
Step 2
Soak them for about an hour, changing the water occasionally for best results. This process will reduce the saltiness while preserving their signature chewy texture.
Step 3
After soaking to remove the salt, rinse the sea mustard stems thoroughly under running cold water several times. Drain them lightly in a colander.
Step 4
Bring a pot of water to a boil and briefly blanch the rinsed sea mustard stems for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy. Immediately rinse the blanched stems under cold water to stop the cooking process, then drain and cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 3-4 cm).
Step 5
Heat a pan over medium-low heat, add 1 Tbsp of perilla oil, and gently sauté the coarsely chopped green onions. Cook until fragrant and the green onions turn translucent and slightly golden. This step creates a flavorful green onion oil.
Step 6
Once the green onions are fragrant, add the coarsely minced garlic and continue to stir-fry. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent the garlic from burning, and cook until the garlic aroma is released.
Step 7
Now, add the prepared sea mustard stems to the pan. Stir-fry them with the green onion oil and garlic until the ingredients are well combined. Remember that the sea mustard stems have their own saltiness, so taste as you go and adjust seasoning accordingly.
Step 8
Add the julienned carrots and sliced onions, and stir-fry until all ingredients are evenly mixed. It’s best not to overcook the vegetables, to maintain their pleasant crunch.
Step 9
Taste the dish at this point. If it’s not salty enough, add a touch of soup soy sauce or salt to adjust the flavor. It’s important to consider the natural saltiness of the sea mustard stems. Finish by drizzling a little more perilla oil for a nutty aroma. Your delicious Stir-fried Salted Sea Mustard Stems are now ready!
